Col and Cime d'Anelle

This morning route is an alternative to the Bois d'Anelle loop, passing via the Cime d'Anelle. The first section climbs through the Ublan countryside, then crosses the woods in the shade of the fir trees.

Description of the walk

The start of the hike is opposite the Jean Franco secondary school, north of the village of Saint-Étienne-de-Tinée. Several free car parks.

GR®5markings (red and white)

(S/E) From marker 77, head towards Col d’Anelle by following a path lined with boxwood hedges. This path crosses the hairpin bends of the Route d’Ublan several times. Continue to follow theGR® markings and cairns until you come to a forest track, which you should follow to the left for 200 m. The path rejoins on the right and winds its way up to marker 80.

(1) Then turn right for a final series of fairly steep hairpin bends.

(2) At marker 81, head straight on towards the Col d’Anelle, where the path levels out and crosses the pastures.

End of theGR®

(3) On reaching the Col d'Anelle, marker 71, leave theGR® and follow the yellow markings to the right through the Bois d'Anelle. Pass the Anelle shelter on your right, and after a short climb, follow the yellow markings to the right and continue for about 300 m until you reach a fork.

(4) Leave the marked trail and follow a well-marked path to the right which climbs towards the Cime d'Anelle.

(5) At an altitude of 1,810 m, the path splits in two. Head down to the left to rejoin the yellow-marked path you left a little earlier.
(It is also possible to turn right to rejoin theGR®5from the outward journey).

(6) At the junction, turn right towards the undergrowth. Take care as the path is narrow and therefore difficult to see.

(7) When you reach the forest track, turn left to find marker 81 further on.

(2) Then follow the path taken on the way there to reach the Collège Jean Franco in the opposite direction (S/E).

Notes

This trail presents no particular difficulties. It is easy to access and very well signposted, with the exception of the section at the Cime d’Anelle, where you should remain alert to changes in direction.
Please note, however, that the first part of the route is quite steep and very sunny. There are no real water sources either, so it is advisable to do this route in spring or autumn.
A modern hut is available near the Col d'Anelle.

The trail starts on a small path that climbs gently and offers lovely views of the mountains, which are very colourful at this time of year. It is well marked until you reach the Col d'Anelle. When you arrive at the Chalets BOUCOUD, it is a very pretty spot. The shelter behind it, a little higher up, where there is a large antenna, is a great place to watch for animals passing by.
The rest of the trail through the forest is not as good because tractors have churned up the path, turning it into a wide dirt track. The climb to the summit is along this track. The return route is partly through undergrowth, where there are lots of mushrooms. A large number of fir trees had been cut down and the path was covered with large branches that we had to climb over. This is temporary, but it meant we lost the path and the GPS track was very useful.
Overall, it is a pleasant hike.

The hike is 12 km long instead of 9.6 km, and the maximum altitude is 1,906 m. It’s quite a challenge. There are lots of trees along the way.

A lovely walk through the forest, best done early in the morning in summer. The only downside is that the Anelle “pass” isn’t particularly impressive. On the other hand, there’s a welcome water source.

It really is a lovely, peaceful walk; as soon as you leave the GR trail, you find yourself all alone in a magnificent forest.
