Col des Baumettes (181m) walks

This walk takes in the calanques of Sormiou, La Triperie, Morgiou and Sugiton. As the start and finish points are different, for the return journey take bus routes B1, 24 or 521 from the ‘Lumigny PN des Calanques’ stop, which is also the departure point for these services.

An easy walk offering views of the coastline to the north and south of Marseille, before following the coast from the Calanque de Marseilleveyre to the Calanque de Callelongue. To the north, you’ll be able to see the city of Marseille, the Stade Vélodrome, the Estaque hills, Mont Rose and the beaches; to the south, Cap Canaille, the Riou archipelago, and so on… You are in the Calanques National Park, which is subject to specific regulations. The Cirque des Pételins is a sight of unparalleled beauty. It is a very little-used trail in the Calanques National Park of Marseille. A superb but demanding hike requiring sure-footedness, good physical fitness and the ability to use a GPS effectively in certain places where the path is harder to find. This hike is not circular; it requires a shuttle service between the Logisson car park and the Col de la Gineste car park. Please note: you are hiking in a national park; please respect the rules and avoid straying from the paths. An easy walk through the Calanques of Marseille, offering views of both the city and the Calanques National Park. You can return by bus, enjoying lovely views of Les Goudes. For those who do not wish to follow the suggested route, alternative routes are provided in the description.

This lovely walk has the advantage, apart from taking place in the magnificent setting of the calanques, of not requiring a car; the whole journey can be made by public transport, so there are no traffic jams on the return journey from Callelongue. We’ll set off from the pretty little harbour of Callelongue, walking along the coast before climbing up to the Plateau de l’Homme Mort via the Malvallon Médian and the Trois Arches. This is followed by the descent to the Vallon de la Jarre and the return journey by bus. You are in the Calanques National Park, which is subject to specific regulations. In March 2023, a hiker (see Alti’s post) informed me that the historic path had been slightly altered beyond the Trois Arches; I will update the route accordingly as soon as possible.

Cross the calanques in two days, arriving/departing from Luminy in between. Pass under the Falaise des Toits and above the Falaises du Devenson and, among others, through the Calanques de Marseilleveyre, Sormiou, Sugiton, En-Vau and Port-Pin. Starting from Port de la Madrague, hike along the edge of the Massif de Marseilleveyre to the Calanque de Callelongue and return via Les Goudes. The balcony trail guarantees superb sea views all along the route.Accessible by public transport.

Starting from the Notre-Dame de la Garde Basilica, this route invites you to head down towards the Corniche, a magnificent winding balcony overlooking the Mediterranean. Here you’ll discover the charm of little hidden corners, such as the Malmousque Peninsula, the Endoume neighbourhood and the famous Vallon des Auffes.
