Description of the walk

To get to the start of the hike: from Molines-en-Queyras, take the Col Agnel road towards Italy. After passing Fontgillarde, park at the Pont de Lariane car park.

(S/E) Cross the bridge and turn left (south-east) onto the track that climbs towards the pass.

(1) Just after the forest and after crossing the small stream (Rif de la Souchière), leave the track and take the path on the right which climbs more steeply. A few metres higher up, look for a large tree commemorating the Roux family with a bench. Continue in this direction until you reach the pass.

(2) Opposite Cousta Embrencha, the path splits in two, but the two branches rejoin a little further up. The left-hand branch (going uphill) is more even and is sometimes used by mountain bikes. It is best to take this path on the way down.

(3) Arrival at Col de Longet.
The return journey will be via the same route as the ascent to reach the Pont de Lariane car park (S/E).

Notes

To the west, you can reach the Pic de Château Renard.
To the east, Pic de Traversier, no path but a steep trail that climbs straight up the ridge.

Refreshments available at the Pont de Lariane car park.

  • From the pass, there are four possible choices:

- Descend by the same route (north),
- Continue to Saint-Véran (south),
- Take an extension to Pic de Château Renard (west, +1.5 hours each way),
- Climb to Pic Traversier (east, +40 mins each way)

**If the hike is done on snowshoes.
Recommended equipment: shovel, avalanche transceiver, probe.
No technical difficulty.
Check the weather forecast and avalanche risk report.
Depending on snow conditions: difficulty and time may vary.

Worth a visit

Along the Edelweiss trail, in the rocks at the pass, you may see Genepi and sometimes chamois (on the Pic Traversier side).

500 m from the car park on the road, the Rocher d'Annibal bears witness to the turbulent history of this road.

A gentle walk if you stop at the pass, but more challenging if you continue to the observatory (recommended). The suggested route after the pass is the best option. It's a shame that it gets a little lost towards the end, but the destination remains clear.

A very beautiful walk.
Once we reached the pass, we continued on to the Chateau-Renard observatory.

A lovely hike, not very busy that Saturday, with people coming and going on holiday. A steady climb in the first part and more intense towards the end. We continued towards the Pic de Château Renard. At the pass, there are three paths, one of which is poorly marked and climbs to the right on the ridge and was reported to us as risky. The other two are well marked. I recommend taking the middle one, even though it stops on the map. It winds gently along the side of the mountain pasture and avoids the need to descend to join the track, which you can reach by avoiding one or two bends. The 360° view from the peak makes this slightly long final climb worthwhile.

A very beautiful hike. As recommended by some, we continued the hike to the St Véran observatory via Pic de Château Renard. The views are breathtaking, and in mid-July, the flower-filled meadows were simply magnificent! The only downside to this hike was that, on the way down, mountain bikers overtook us without any consideration.

A classic route in the valley where you almost have to jostle for position. A steady climb without too much risk, good snow quality thanks to the exposure, and a beautiful view at the top: that explains it.

Hike completed on Sunday, 5 September 2021. Beautiful hike, shaded with cows at the beginning, then a little steeper and without shade. Upon reaching the pass, we arrived at the St Véran observatory and the Pic de Château Renard. To do this, simply take the well-marked trail immediately to the right after the pass. A little further on, it joins the "car" track leading to the observatory. This saves a little elevation gain and the pleasant side of the trail is far superior to that of the track.
There were very few people at the beginning of September.
We completed this hike, with its "add-on", in 6 hours and 20 minutes, with plenty of short breaks to chat with the marmots, watch the birds of prey fly, admire the flora and have a quick picnic.
