Description of the walk

Start from the church in Vitrolles-en-Luberon. Parking available but limited in the adjacent streets.

Signposts at major junctions.

Red and white markings

(S/E) Opposite the church, turn right onto Rue de la Fontaine. You will immediately notice the fountain and a wash house on the left. Head downhill and, at the signpost marked ‘La Combe’, turn right and go down a steep slope.

(1) Continue along the D216. Stay on this road, which alternates between gentle ascents and descents. Pass the “Les Pins” signpost and then the hamlet of Le Serre.

(2) Shortly afterwards, when the road turns right, take the Piste DFCI des Barons on the left. At the fork that appears immediately, keep right and walk alongside a vineyard on your left. Then walk alongside another vineyard plot on your right and, at the corner of this, turn right. At the next corner, turn left onto a grassy path.

(3) At a fork, take the left-hand path and walk alongside a field on your right. The path is very narrow; you must walk along the edge of the field, taking care not to damage the crops.

(4) At the far end of the field, veer left and enter a pine wood. Walk first on level ground then downhill with a few hairpin bends. Pass a fenced-in house on the right and head for the “La Tuilière” signpost.

(5) Follow a track to the left towards Pas du Loup and La Bastide-des-Jourdans. Walk along a gentle slope, following a stream below on the right. Cross the stream at the ford and climb steadily.

(6) Turn right onto a stony path. Climb through the pine forest, initially steeply then on a gentle slope. This leads to a three-way junction, the highest point of the walk.

(7) Turn right and head downhill. At the fork shortly afterwards, veer left onto a path that soon gives way to a stony track. Descend to the Pas du Loup.

(8) Then turn left towards La Bastide-des-Jourdans. Enjoy a pleasant walk along a path that alternates between gentle ascents and descents. Ignore a path coming from the right and then a turn-off to the left. This brings you to the “La Verrerie” signpost.

Yellow markings

(9) Turn left towards Bagne Labre (let the GR® continue straight on). Climb gently and follow a field on your left. Ignore a path branching off to the right, head back down and pass between plots of vineyards.

No markings

(10) You’ll come out onto the D956; follow it to the right. Ignore a turn-off on the right, head downhill and enter La Bastide-des-Jourdans.

(11) As you come out of the right-hand bend, turn left onto Rue Marius Szanyiel. Continue straight ahead and downhill. Join the D956, follow it to the left then turn right with it (ignore the D27 on the left).

Red and white markings

(12) At the signpost for “La Bastide-des-Jourdans”, continue straight ahead.

No markings

(13) Pass an old gate on the left and continue along the main road (Cours de la République). Opposite the town hall, turn left and cross a square featuring a fountain column.

(14) Then turn right onto Rue de la Bourgade towards the church. Shortly afterwards, go down a flight of steps on the left to reach the church entrance.

(15) Walk round the church on the right and note the view of the old castle. At a fork, take the left-hand path, which goes uphill, and return to the square with the fountain.

(14) Then take the second right, Rue de la Pombosse. At a fork, head up Rue du Serret on the right. Pass by the clock tower, keeping it on your left, and head back down Rue du Serret. You’ll come out onto another street; follow it to the left. Ignore another street on the left and pass under the old gate you saw earlier.

Red and white markings

(13) Cross the main road and follow it to the right towards Forcalquier.

(12) Back at the signpost for “La Bastide-des-Jourdans”, turn left towards La Verrerie. Stay on the main road, ignoring the side paths, and climb gently.

(16) At a junction, take the VC12 (Chemin de Notre-Donne) slightly to the right. Ignore a dirt track on the left and continue climbing along the road. At the end of the tarmac, continue along a stony track.

(17) At a three-way junction, turn right and pass an EDF substation. Ignore a turn-off on the left and head downhill to the “La Verrerie” signpost.

(9) Head straight towards Pas du Loup, following the path taken on the way out in the opposite direction (ignore a turn-off on the right, then one on the left).

Yellow markings

(8) At Pas du Loup, continue straight on towards La Varanque and head downhill.

(18) When you reach a ruined house, turn left and cross a wasteland. Then enter the forest and descend for a long stretch. At the bottom, ignore the entrance to a private property on the right and cross a small bridge.

(19) You’ll come out onto a road (D216) and follow it to the right towards La Tuilière. When you reach a house, turn right onto the Piste DFCI du Pissaire and you’ll soon reach the “La Tuilière” signpost.

Red and white markings

(5) Turn left and follow the path back along the same route as on the way out until the end. Climb up the path through the pine forest.

(4) Go round the field on the right (same instructions as on the way there).

(3) Then go round a vineyard on the right, rejoin a DFCI track and immediately reach the D216.

(2) Follow this road to the right until you reach the sign marking the entrance to Vitrolles.

(1) Leave the road and head straight up the steep slope. At the top, turn right twice, go up Rue de la Fontaine and reach the church in Vitrolles (S/E).
