How to get there: From Remiremont, take the D417 towards La Bresse. At Le Syndicat (Bréhavilliers), turn right onto the D43. At the Vagney roundabout, turn left and enter Vagney. At the Stop sign, turn right. 200 metres further on, turn left onto the D34 towards Basse-sur-le-Rupt. It is a further 5 km to the church car park in Planois (also known as Basse-sur-le-Rupt).
(S/E) Follow the Blue Saltire signs to point (6). Walk up the D34 (main road) for about a hundred metres. At the Stop sign, turn sharply left and, a few metres further on, turn right onto the path that winds north-eastwards to reach a tarmac road.
(1) Head down the path on the right and pass between two houses. After a very damp section, head up to the right then left to reach the first viewpoint (elevation 806).
(2) At the crossroads, turn right and head up towards Le Pollé (picnic table, magnificent view of Planois).
(3) Set off again heading east-north-east. Follow the edge of the forest then emerge into open country. At a crossroads, turn right onto a small path leading to La Piquante Pierre (1008m).
(4) Follow a wide path north-eastwards. At a Fork in the road, turn right (east) to reach the Col de Menufosse (966m).
(5) Carry on straight ahead. Pass the Chemin de l’Envers des Routes on your left and continue to the crossroads (1,000 m, bench, magnificent view due south).
(6) Follow the Yellow Triangle marked path south-eastwards; it descends steeply. Pass through the hamlet of Les Moinats and join a tarmac road leading to the Col de la Croix des Moinats (890m).
(7) Turn left onto the tarmac road C12 towards Droit de Parfongoutte. One hundred metres further down, turn right onto a wide Red Cross path that climbs due south. Don’t miss the viewpoint on your left, offering views of La Bresse to the west and Cornimont to the south. At a three-way junction, turn right until you reach the Col de Lansau (920m).
(8) Follow the wide path westwards, descending to two houses before joining a tarmac road. Turn right and head back up to the Col des Hayes (887m).
(9) Continue left along the very wide path (Red Cross). Ignore a path on your right (Blue Cross) which descends directly to Planois. Looking back, you can see the entire route you have covered since the start of the walk.
Head back up along a tarmac road to a picnic table at the edge of the forest.
(10) Turn left onto a lovely little path at the edge of the forest, marked with three rings (Blue Ring, Yellow Ring and Red Ring). Follow this path to a crossroads.
(11) Here, leave the Blue and Red Ring markings and turn right onto the Yellow Ring (numbers 52 and 53 painted on trees). A hundred metres further on, turn left onto the wide path leading to the Croix du Haut du Roc (1014m).
(12) Retrace your steps, then turn right onto a path marked with a Red Triangle which passes in front of the Tables de Charlemagne. Follow the Red Triangle markings and descend to the buildings of a holiday camp. Then turn right onto the wide path. At the next Fork in the road, keep left.
(13) About a hundred metres further on, leave this path and take a track on the left. From here, head downhill, crossing numerous paths: follow the Red Triangle markings carefully – and only those – all the way to Les Auberts.
(14) Follow the road to the right and you’ll come out onto the D34. Follow this road to the left for 200 metres to return to the starting point (S/E).
