The Roches Saint-Jacques as seen from the Saut du Bouchot

The Gerbamont region offers several routes and remarkable sites. One of these is the Saut du Bouchot and its twin waterfalls. This circular route leads to the Roches Saint-Jacques at an altitude of 1,000 metres. The ascent takes place entirely within woodland. The descent offers better views thanks to a more open route.

Description of the walk

The walk starts at the Saut du Bouchot car park.

(S/E) Take the path leading down towards the river, then turn right to see the waterfall.

(1) You can swim here, either in the first pool or in the second , taking care when climbing up the right-hand bank. Then return to the car park.

Red Disc markings

(S/E) Follow the road to the left until you reach the bend. Just after the road bridge, take the track towards Les Roches Saint-Jacques. After a steep slope, the track turns into a path and runs alongside a field. Then turn right to cross the field and reach the junction of the circular route.

(2) Keep to the left and stay on level ground. Stay on the wide track to the left until you reach a house.

(3) Then turn right and carry on straight ahead until you reach the road. Turn right to reach a junction.

Green Disc signposting

(4) Follow the road on the right, then turn straight onto the next track on the right. Continue to the stream; after crossing it, take three hairpin bends to reach a wide track.

(5) Follow it to the left, then turn right onto a steeply ascending track. Stay on this track until you reach a hairpin bend (part of the signposting differs on IGN maps). Take this bend, then another hairpin bend to the left. Continue straight on until the path levels out. Then turn left to quickly reach a junction.

No signposting

(6) Follow the path on the right.

Green Ring signposting

Keep to the right again at the next fork, then turn left to climb the Roches Saint-Jacques.

(7) Then descend slightly to reach a four-way fork in the road.

Green Triangle markings

(8) Carry on straight ahead (the signposted route has changed from that shown on IGN maps), then take a track on the right. Pass the memorial stone on your right and continue keeping to the left until you reach Les Plateaux and the road.

(9) Head straight down the slope to take the next track on the right. Keep to the left until you reach a shelter and a viewpoint.

(10) Follow the second track on the right, then continue straight ahead, heading downhill, until you reach the houses. Follow the access path to the road.

(11) Keep going straight ahead, then start heading downhill to the left. At the road, turn left and head towards the Faing Berrey farm.

(12) Take the footpath, then keep to the left. Then keep to the right until you reach the road.

Red Triangle markings

(13) Follow it in this direction, then head down to the left until you reach the junction from the outward journey.

(2) Return to the starting point via the same route (S/E).

There are several gaps in the signposting, so it’s difficult to follow the right route without the right equipment: a guidebook, map or GPS. That said, the walk is very pleasant and of a reasonable difficulty.

A lovely walk in an area I was already familiar with, apart from the Roches Saint Jacques. A woodland route with a steady climb in the first section, but it’s all worth the effort. The description lacks a bit of detail, as the signposting isn’t great when heading up towards the rocks – the Green Disc is nowhere to be seen except at the start of the path. I’d suggest specifying the street names at points 3 and 4 to avoid confusion, as it’s not straightforward without a GPS; then, once you reach the path with the Green Disc, clearly indicate to turn left, stating the distance from the junction. Otherwise, no problems – after the rocks, everything is well signposted. Pointing out these kinds of details isn’t meant as a criticism; I know how difficult it is to describe a route, which is never an easy task for the route planner. Thank you for enabling me to discover a new site in this area.

A lovely walk, starting with the Saut du Bouchot, a beautiful waterfall, and then it’s all uphill to the Rocher Saint Jacques. Lunch break and the walk back, with stunning views over the valley.
An added bonus at the end of the walk was seeing people doing stone balancing in the Bouchot River.
