A very pleasant walk with multiple viewpoints along the route. It will take you to the rocky summit of Haut du Roc, which rises to an altitude of 1,012 metres, an ideal place for a break, with a magnificent panorama over the Moselotte Valley as far as Remiremont.

Description of the walk

From Vagney, head towards Planois on the D34. After Planois, continue straight on the CD34 from Presles to La Barre. Turn right onto the Col des Hayes road to the pass of the same name.

Parking: Col des Hayes

(S/E) Follow the wide sandy path on the right up towards Haut du Roc (marked with yellow, red and blue rings). This continues to the left along a small tarmac section for about 400 m to a picnic table. Be sure to take in the beautiful 360° view of the meadows, hills and farms.

(1) Just before the rest area, turn left onto the grassy path that runs alongside a fence: the red, yellow and blue rings only appear further on, or if you turn off just after the picnic table. The path runs along the edge of the woods and offers beautiful views of the Southern Vosges, from Grand Ventron to Planche des Belles Filles.

(2) At the crossroads, turn right (Yellow Ring only) for 50 metres to reach a wide stony path. Although the Red Cross and Blue Cross signs direct you to turn left onto this wide path to reach Haut du Roc (possible for an easier climb), cross over to take the path opposite, which cuts through the forest and climbs steeply: Red Cross and Blue Cross marked on the IGN map. Higher up, at a bend, it joins the stony path you crossed earlier, which leads to the antenna and the summit of Haut du Roc.

(3) Walk 50 metres back to the left to see the "Tables de Charlemagne" before continuing to the summit of Haut du Roc.

(4) Magnificent panorama at the summit of Haut du Roc. Large cross, altar and viewpoint over the valley. Ideal spot for a picnic break with two conveniently placed tables (no shade). Retrace your steps.

(3) Continue opposite and 30 metres further down, at the wooden electricity pole, turn left to follow the rocky path that goes around the summit of Haut du Roc in an anti-clockwise direction (Green Ring - Route des Roches). The path winds its way under the sometimes monumental rocks. Cross a small ravine via a wooden footbridge (Pont Gérard), which is very pretty amid the heather, climb up and at the next crossroads, under the cross, do not turn right towards the colony, but continue straight on along the "Route des Roches", still following the Green Ring.

(5) Before reaching the Tables de Charlemagne seen earlier, leave the Circuit des Roches trail by turning right towards Planois (Red Triangle), Saulxure (Red Cross and Blue Cross) to continue the slight descent and come out onto a wider path.

(6) Leave Planois on your right and follow the Blue Ring, Red Cross and Blue Cross markings on your left. The trail winds through the forest, then along the edge of the woods before descending more steeply to the left to the crossroads known as "des Bouleaux".

(7) Turn left: Red Ring painted on the trees. Note: two parallel paths, a few metres apart, turn left but rejoin 100 metres further on. The path, which quickly becomes grassy, is very pleasant and the view gradually opens up. Don't miss the magnificent view of the valley, about 50 metres off the path on the right, just before a small barrier that cuts across the path.

(8) Turn back and continue to the right on this pretty and very pleasant path. Pass a water tank and a house on your left. Over the next 300 metres, the path collects a lot of runoff water and becomes very wet and spongy.

(9) Do not descend towards the house on the right, but continue along the slightly uphill path on the left through large meadows. Further on, you will reach the small road to Lansau and the Col des Hayes (S/E).

Two picnic tables in the sun at the top of Haut du Roc in (4).

Worth a visit

(4) Le Haut du Roc
Along with La Planche des Belles Filles, Le Haut du Roc is the westernmost peak of the Vosges mountains. It is notable for its panoramic views, but also for its characteristic sedimentary rocks and its calvary, erected in 1933.

(3) The "Tables de Charlemagne"
Through geological processes such as erosion and weathering over a long period of time, these are natural rock formations resembling tables due to their flat surface made of solid rock. The name "Tables de Charlemagne" refers to a legend that says that the legendary Frankish king Charlemagne rested or dined at this spot.

A pleasant and fairly easy hike, allowing you to discover interesting sites and beautiful views. The directions are precise.

Not very busy at this time of year, recommended as a half-day outing, possibly with children, especially if there is a photo exhibition on.

Surprise following the previous report indicated between 8 and 9, as we did not encounter any passage onto private property during the description of this walk.

Great route, except between 8 and 9 you have to take a detour with a steep climb along a private road, which is not marked on the maps.

A beautiful hike without any real difficulties. The climbs are gradual.
The explanations are quite clear.
Despite strong winds, the path is well sheltered from gusts except on the peaks.
