Route between Madon and the forest

The Madon and its tributaries are waterways that are important to preserve and maintain, both to limit flooding and for the environment, as they are sources of biodiversity and are responsible for the landscapes you will pass through on this walk.

Description of the walk

Park in the village of Maroncourt. Follow the blue circle markings throughout the route.

(S/E) Return to the main road (D40), turn right for about 40 metres, then take a sharp left turn to leave the village and climb the hill in front of you. Once you reach the top of the hill, continue along the path down towards Velotte-et-Tatignécourt. Join the path that runs alongside the dual carriageway (D166).

(1) Follow the dual carriageway and continue until you reach the junction with a path leading into the forest. (For information, the path that passes under the bridge joins the Trois Terroirs route around Blaye).

(2) Take this path on the right. In the woods, follow the markings carefully. Pass the forestry information panel.

(3) Continue until you reach Les Mardelles.

(4) Keep to this path heading south until you reach the junction with a wide forest path.

(5) Turn right onto it. Feel free to take a short break next to the Croix Jeannette.

(6) Stay in the woods and then exit to reach a paved road. Take this road to the right to reach the village of Hagécourt. In the village, pass in front of the town hall, built on the site of a former wash house, then turn right to descend towards Madon.

(7) Immediately take the first street on the right (Rue de l'École). Turn left towards Saint-Hilaire Church and its cemetery, which houses the original Croix Jeannette.
At the crossroads, go down to the left, passing the church and cemetery, to join the departmental road (D40). Turn right and stay on the road. Pass the riparian forest sign.

(8) Continue on the D40 (caution, drive carefully). At the entrance to the village, turn left, pass the rosary pump and you will arrive back at the car park where you started (S/E).

Notes

Please note: this hike is the result of an agreement between the Dompaire La Gitte Vosges Club, the Epinal Vosges Club and the Mirecourt-Dompaire COMCOM.
It is not my creation and you can find the brochure on the COMCOM website.

Worth a visit

The Jeannette cross is one of the small heritage features scattered throughout the area, bearing witness to ways of life and stories that are sometimes forgotten. It is important to protect and showcase them so that we know where we come from, but also to understand how life was organised in our villages.

Circular completed twice (clockwise and anti-clockwise) in 1 hour by mountain bike. The path/road sections are nothing to write home about, but this is more than compensated for by the forest section.

A lovely walk in the heart of summer through the beautiful landscapes of the Vosges plain.
Alternating between paths along fields and meadows and through woods.
No difficulty.

Hike completed in sub-zero temperatures on 22 January 2023...
Between points 1 and 2, part of the route is on a path along the edge of a field parallel to the fairly busy D166 road => may be difficult to avoid, but not very pleasant...
After leaving the forest, after point 7, heading towards Hagécourt, a continuous return on a tarmac road to Maroncourt => not very pleasant...
Winter outing in the afternoon, fairly easy...

It is a lovely route through a remarkable, protected forest (where you can admire a 200-year-old oak tree), but given the distance to be covered on tarmac, I think it is more suitable for mountain bikes.

An easy hike with superb views of the surrounding valleys and villages – a real pleasure. Numerous information boards in the forest immerse us in this exceptional environment. We had a picnic in the sheltered hut at La Croix (the weather wasn't very good) and opened our Birdnet software to identify the birds. We picked ripe blackberries, crossed a pretty village with the Madon bridge, and returned home very satisfied with our walk.
I highly recommend it!
Thank you to the creator of this hike.

A beautiful walk with quite varied landscapes. The only less pleasant part is where the path runs alongside the road between Mirecourt and Dompaire. We were lucky enough to see a deer, a rabbit... and hear a chorus of birdsong. The valley at the edge of the forest is very beautiful.
