Route de Circourt

A pleasant little walk through woods, fields and paths, with some gentle hills. Starting from Virine, you’ll head down to Circourt, walk around the village and climb back up through the woods to return to Virine, passing a 360° viewpoint! Ideal in summer with plenty of shaded areas, though there are a few fairly steep slopes.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at Croix de Virine.
The route is fairly well signposted with Yellow Discs

(S/E) Head towards the Croix de Virine, which involves a steep climb for about a hundred metres!

(1) Then head towards the small turnstile at the edge of the field and cross the field for about a hundred metres towards the next turnstile, then continue straight on along the orchard until you reach the bottom.

(2) Turn right, continue along the orchard and enter the woods, heading towards a junction.

(3) Turn right and leave the woods heading towards the village of Circourt. As you leave the woods, you’ll find a tarmac road for about 1.5 km until you reach the entrance to Circourt (Rue de Bouxières).

(4) Turn left and cross the village, passing the town hall and the church, until you reach the Grand Rue.

(5) Turn left and continue for 350 m.

(6) Turn right towards the housing estate; you will then leave the road and take a stony track that climbs for 750 m.

(7) Once at the top of the hill, take the field path on your left for 300 m.

(8) Leave the track at the edge of the woods and follow the signposts. You will now follow winding paths through woods and fields before entering the woods completely.
Walk for about 1 km through the woods, following the signs, until you reach a road.

(9) Cross it and join the path opposite. Walk the final kilometre through slightly hillier woodland and return to the junction in the woods you passed earlier.

(3) Turn right and follow the path back along the same route to return to the car park (S/E).

With some fairly steep slopes and gradients, walking poles will be a great help on this hike.

A lovely little route through woodland or across fields. The only downside is the signposting around Haut Héré, where you need to pay closer attention.
I recommend this pleasant route, which offers magnificent views at the Croix de Virine.

A walk taken on a beautiful sunny day. An easy, pleasant route with a beautiful view at the start and end of the route at Croix de Virine. Part of the hike is on tarmac roads before and after Circourt. Return through fields and woods after the old quarry at the top of Le Herré. Signposting could be improved at Le Herré before entering the woods. Very good signposting in the woods.

A fairly easy and very pleasant walk with wide, unobstructed views for much of the route, followed by a return through the woods, which is no doubt very enjoyable in summer. As we’re coming to the end of a rainy winter season, take care as the ground in this wooded section is damp and, above all, very slippery. Good walking shoes and poles are a must. As for picnics, there are two tables at the car park at the starting point and a few benches at the summit of Virine. For a break halfway along the route, there are no tables or benches, but you can stop for a ‘nature break’ at Haut du Herré on a lovely grassy area (at the exit of the ‘old gypsum quarry’ copse, just after point 8).
