Description of the walk

You can park at Place de l’Église, located next to the Tourist Information Office in Chaource.

(S/E) Starting from the Tourist Information Office in Chaource (at No. 2 on the street known as Grande Rue), head towards Ervy-le-Châtel via the D443, Rue Amadys-Jamyn. At the corner of the cemetery, leave the D34 on your right and continue along the D443 for about 300m until you reach a junction marked by the Sainte-Anne wayside shrine.

(1) Turn left onto the Chemin de Sainte-Anne. You will come to a crossroads.

(2) Turn right towards Les Poteries. Stay on theGRP® marked in red and yellow and ignore all side paths. You will come out onto a small road in the hamlet of Les Poteries.

(3) Follow the road to the left. Continue along the gravel path leading to the edge of the Cussangy Forest.

(4) Head straight ahead onto a forest track and ignore a turn-off to the right after about a hundred metres. Stay on the main, signposted path, heading south then south-southeast, and ignore all side paths.

(5) On leaving the forest, turn right onto the Chemin des Noués. Continue straight on (south); this leads to Cussangy.

(6) At the crossroads, continue straight ahead onto the D27. Pass in front of the school, then past the foot of the church, and reach the D444. Follow this road to the right towards Tonnerre for about 200m until you reach a junction (take care, stay on the hard shoulder).

(7) Take the path on the left which, further on, leads into the Val Lucie. You’ll come out onto a perpendicular, stony track.

(8) Then turn left (let theGRP® head off to the right). Head north-north-east.

(9) At the fork in the road (water tower on the right), continue straight on to Lagesse.

(10) You will come out onto Rue Charles Wardot; follow it to the left for a few metres. Turn right into Rue du Guet-Joly, then left into Rue Rabot. You will reach a T-junction.

(11) Take the D203 on the left. Follow theGRP® signposting. Pass the cemetery and reach the start of a track.

(12) Turn right and, 1 km further on, reach a junction.

(13) Turn left onto a field track. At the T-junction immediately ahead, turn right. Follow the track to the left, then turn right at thefirst junction. You will come out onto the D34; follow it to the right for 50m.

(14) Before the silos, take a path on the left. Head straight north, then north-north-west. Pass a pumping station and, about 250m further on, ignore a turn-off on the left. Ignore two turn-offs on the right and arrive in Chaource.

Worth a visit

Discover the village of Chaource

A cheese with character

The village gave its name to the famous cheese: Chaource. Awarded AOC status in 1970 and AOP status in 1996, Chaource is a round, soft-textured cow’s milk cheese with a bloomy rind. Its delicate flavour is appreciated both in France and abroad.

A church with a thousand treasures

Chaource is also known for its Saint-Jean-Baptiste church, listed as a historic monument in 1840, and its remarkable treasures: a Baroque organ built in 1696 and listed as a historic monument in 1959, medieval sculptures, a gilded wooden nativity scene unique in the world, and The Entombment, a masterful sculpture created in 1515.

Continue your walk...

From Chaource, heading towards Troyes, you will pass through the Aumont Forest, which covers 14,000 hectares. Its network of beautiful paths invites you to discover its rich flora and fauna. Backed by the forest and ranked among the most beautiful golf courses in France, the Cordelière Golf Club’s 18-hole course unfolds at the foot of its sumptuous château, on a vast expanse of greenery.

A pleasant walk, though not one to remember forever. Fortunately, a visit to Chaource Church brings the walk to a lovely close.

I set off at 6.45 am to beat the heat, and really enjoyed the surroundings of the little villages in the Aube region whilst the sun was still low in the sky. The grassy paths were a bit tricky, as they hadn’t been mown (this year’s late harvests seem to have delayed the preparation of the paths as well).
The centre of Chaource, with its building works on the façades, was a bit of a let-down; it didn’t feel very lively...
The final stretch after Chaource is more undulating and through woodland, so more pleasant in the late morning.

I might suggest it to friends, without making it an absolute must-do.
