Description of the walk

Start from the car park at Saint-Martin’s Church.

(S/E) With your back to the church dedicated to Saint Hubert, patron saint of the parish, head straight ahead along Rue de l’Église, then continue straight on along Chemin La Laurette, D115.

(1) At the pumping station, turn left onto the small road and continue until you reach a path on the left.

(2) Take this path and you will reach a track.

(3) Turn right and go straight on until you reach the Sambre canal; ignore the small path on the right.

(4) Take the Sambre towpath on the right, keeping it on your right. Continue straight on until you reach the Fesmy supply dam on the right bank.

(5) Turn right and immediately take the path on the right to follow the Sambre’s discharge channel. Continue straight on until you rejoin the route you have already taken. Turn left and follow the path back in the opposite direction.

(3) Stay on the path that branches off to the right, pass the sewage treatment plant and, at the junction, turn left and return to the church car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

The commune dates back to 1896. According to Father Boniface, Rejet derives its name from the Old French word ‘Rejon’: country, region, remote place… but it also means: uncultivated land. Beaulieu is thought to be the name of a local hamlet.

The supply basins were dug due to the higher elevation of Rejet-de-Beaulieu compared
Oisy and Catillon-sur-Sambre, in order to balance the water levels upstream and downstream of the lock.

A lovely walk in autumn. I really enjoyed this very easy route: there’s hardly any elevation gain. However, make sure you wear sturdy shoes and bring a spare pair of socks in wet weather: it gets muddy in places.
I spotted grey herons, goldcrests, robins, titmice, buzzards, etc. On the path along the stream, you might even spot kingfishers!
It took me less than two hours, including long breaks for photos and birdwatching. I only came across two anglers between the bridge and the start of the path.

, a route that’s supposed to take just under 2 hours, but it took me 2 hours and 20 minutes with two 5-minute breaks...
I’m not used to long walks; this one is just under 6 km, very easy, with varied terrain,
and unobstructed views at the end of winter when the leaves have fallen, allowing you to see through the hedges under a beautiful blue sky. Very diverse landscapes.
