Around Saint-Martin-Rivière

Starting from Saint-Martin-Rivière, this route takes you into the heart of the rolling countryside of northern Aisne, between peaceful bocage and charming villages. Following small roads and hedged paths, you pass through Ribeauville, then Wassigny, an ancient fortified town where history is evident in every stone.

The walk continues towards La Vallée-Mulâtre, nestled in lush greenery, before reaching Molain, where open meadows and farm tracks offer a breath of fresh air. This accessible and rejuvenating circuit combines rural heritage and gentle landscapes for an authentic immersion in the heart of the Thiérache region.

Description of the walk

Park near the church on Place des Acacias.

(S/E) With your back to the church, take Rue de la Chapelle towards the town hall. At the end of the village, at the bend, keep right and follow the main road to the intersection with the wind farm road.

(1) Turn right and continue to the Demi-Lieue farm. Continue straight ahead until you reach the junction with the D68.

(2) Turn left onto the D68, cross the hamlet of Bellevue, then, at the junction with the D27, turn left towards Ribeauville. After 300 m, you will reach a wayside shrine on the Grande Rue.

(3) Turn right twice: first onto Rue d'en Haut (D68), then follow this road to the junction with Rue de la Gloriette in Wassigny.

(4) Turn right onto Place du Docteur Maréchal, then turn right twice to join Rue de la 1re Dina until you reach Rue Maillard.

(5) Turn right, then take the second left onto Rue de Bohain and follow it to the edge of the woods.

(6) Cross the Selle. On leaving the built-up area, stay on the side of the road and, facing the Andigny national forest, turn left south onto the Route forestière de la Presselette until you reach the junction with the Route forestière du Blocus.

(7) Turn right onto this forest road and continue to the Blancs Fossés crossroads (D28).

(8) Take the second right towards La Vallée-Mulâtre via the D68. Pass Mal Assise and follow Rue de Verdun until the intersection before the bridge.

(9) Turn left, follow the bend, ignore the road opposite and, at the next fork, turn right onto Chemin des Charbonniers. Continue right to join Chemin de la Rue Charles Divry.

(10) Keep right as you cross the Bois Saint-Pierre. At the next intersection, turn right, ignore the side roads and continue on Rue du Bois Saint-Pierre until you reach Molain, joining Rue de la Brasserie.

(11) Keep left for a few metres, then turn right at the intersection with Rue Jean Jaurès (D76). Ignore the two streets on the right and the one on the left, and follow Rue René Descartes until you reach the bend in the D76, opposite the calvary.

(12) Without crossing the bridge, take the path on the left. At the end of this path, turn right onto Chemin des Maquisards, cross La Selle again, and you will arrive at Place des Acacias, near the car park where you started. (S/E)
