Description of the walk

Start from Place Thévenot (where the post office is located).

Follow route no. 9 as signposted where other routes intersect – the other numbers correspond to other routes in neighbouring towns.

(S/E) Follow Rue de la Chaussée to the right at the corner of the post office (heading east) and take the bridge over the canal. Turn right into Rue de la Halle and immediately turn left into Rue de la Red Cross, following the GR®41 (red and white markings). Walk up to the forecourt of the Basilica of Notre-Dame-des-Enfants.

(1) Turn left into Rue de la Ville Haute and you will soon find the entrance to the castle.

(2) Continue along the street, which bends slightly to the right a little further on, to reach the water tower. Then turn left and walk along the cemetery wall on your left. Take thefirst left, the D73E, still following the cemetery wall. This road bends to the right and immediately reaches a Fork in the road (cross).

(3) Leave the road and head off to the right, leaving the buildings on your left. Head due north and pass through the hamlet of Maison Neuve. The road then gives way to a path.

(4) At the next junction, take the path on the right (leave the GR®41). Walk through the hamlet of Saint-Marc and you will come to the D73.

(5) Cross the road (watch out for traffic) and take the path opposite that leads into a wood. On leaving the wood, continue through the fields. After a left-hand bend, ignore a path branching off to the right. Reach the D940 at the hamlet of Les Fonts James.

(6) Cross the road (watch out for traffic) and take the small road opposite towards Le Pavillon (take care). Walk alongside a pond on your right. At the three-way junction, turn right and walk through the hamlet of Le Pavillon.

(7) At the end of the road, turn right. After about 200 m, take thefirst path on the left. At the end (marker 168), turn right. The path turns left then right at the edge of a copse. At the T-junction (marker 167), go left.

(8) Cross the D14 (watch out for traffic) and continue along the small road opposite. When this turns right, carry straight on along a track. At the next junction (marker 167), veer to the right. Go straight on (south-west), ignore a turn-off on the left and join a small road at the entrance to Boissereau.

(9) Follow the road to the right. At the end, cross the D35, follow it to the right (take care) and leave the hamlet.

(10) After about 200 m, take thefirst path on the left. At the next junction, veer right. Take the footbridge over the canal feeding the white-water complex.

(11) Turn right at the end of the footbridge. Stay on this path, which joins the canal further on. At the junction (marker 138), continue straight ahead along the canal. The path soon veers away from the canal. Ignore a path on the right and proceed to a junction (pumping station).

(12) Then head diagonally to the right. At the next junction, turn right. At the crossroads, take thesecond lane on the left and enter the campsite. Follow the path and cross two footbridges, leaving the whitewater complex on your right. Turn left at the end of thesecond footbridge and you will soon return to the starting point (S/E).

Worth a visit

- The Basilica of Notre-Dame des Enfants – A fascinating history for this Neo-Gothic religious building

- The Château de Châteauneuf-sur-Cher is a beautiful, well-maintained Renaissance building.
With its breathtaking view of Châteauneuf and the Cher Valley, it can only be visited by appointment for groups of at least 20 people.
As the château was converted into flats a few years ago, the current owners are striving to restore this imposing Colbert residence to its former glory.

- The whitewater complex: A real pool offering excellent thrills: tubing, swimming down the rapids...
All you need is to be able to swim and book on 02 48 60 84 40 - www.chateauneufeauxvives.com

- Canoeing on the Cher: by the day, half-day or by the hour, you can explore the wild Cher at your own pace. This trip is suitable for everyone! Bookings: Châteauneuf Pagaie Aventure: 06 11 08 28 80 - www.chateauneufpagaieaventure.org - cap.contact@orange.fr

- Hourly stand-up paddleboarding on the canal: individual or for groups of up to 8 people - Bookings: Châteauneuf Pagaie Aventure: 06 11 08 28 80 - www.chateauneufpagaieaventure.org - cap.contact@orange.fr

- Châteauneuf-sur-Cher developed around two centres: the upper town on the rocky promontory where the castle was built, and the lower town, which served as a thoroughfare.
The town enjoyed a golden age thanks to cloth and wool merchants, then through agricultural production and market gardening, and finally through wine distillation and the production of Corquoy lime.
A route through the town allows you to discover the hidden gems of this community.

This route is easy: no significant elevation gain, with wide, well-marked paths
It’s enjoyable because of the variety of paths and scenery: woodland, open countryside, and canal and river banks.

A good route for families, provided that everyone is able to cover the 13 km.

Note: at the start, the interior of the Children’s Basilica is well worth a visit!
