Description of the walk

Head to the village of Anjou and park in the church car park on the side of the D51 road. The hike starts from this point.

(S/E) Set off along the D51 with the church behind you. After about 50 metres, turn right up the village hill towards the Anjou tower: there is a tourist signpost indicating the direction. You will pass the entrance to Fondru Castle. Continue up the hill towards the Old Village. You will pass the foot of the chapel in the old village of Anjou.

Then take the first street on the right and continue uphill. At the next junction, keep to the right. Continue until you reach a cross, where you take the path on the left. Follow this path uphill to the entrance of the park where the ruins of the Anjou Tower are located.

(1) After viewing the monument, cross the park to exit on the opposite side to where you entered. At the park exit, turn left onto the road. At the next junction, follow the road to the left.
Walk past the Sapin de la Victoire, keeping to the right-hand side of the road. Continue until you reach a hiking signpost and the start of a dirt track on your right.

(2) Take the dirt track and continue straight downhill, ignoring a path branching off to the left, until you reach the first houses in the hamlet of Terre Basse.

(3) Cross the ford, where there is a footbridge to use if the water is high. Continue straight on. At the next junction, turn right uphill onto the Chemin de la Rénèze. Pass through Ville-sous-Anjou, continuing straight on. Ignore the Route de la Madone on the right.

(4) After passing the church, continue straight ahead and slightly to the right, going uphill. Pass in front of the entrance to Ville-sous-Anjou Castle.
You will arrive at a place called Le Baude.
Reach the junction at the first houses in this hamlet and turn left onto the Chemin du Petit Baude. Continue along this tarmac road uphill. Then, continuing straight on, the road becomes a dirt track, still going uphill.

(5) You will reach the statue of the Madonna. There are picnic tables here.
After passing the base of the statue’s column, continue straight ahead and take the tarmac road on the left (Route de la Madone).
Reach another junction and take the first road on the right. Then continue along this road until you reach the hamlet of La Feytaz.

(6) At the hamlet of La Feytaz, the road ends and continues as a dirt track. Stay on the main track, ignoring the paths branching off to the right and left, until you reach a junction. At this point, make a zigzag turn and continue straight ahead, ignoring the paths to the right and left. Continue along this path until you reach a path branching off to the right, marked in red and white (GR®65).

(7) Take this GR® on your right, which is none other than the Way of St James. Stay on the marked path. You will pass a wooden cross at the crossroads. Continue straight on, still following theGR®, until you reach another crossroads.

(8) Leave theGR® here and take the path on the right which, heading south-west, leads to a house on your left.

(9) At the house, just before reaching the tarmac road, take a dirt track on the right which passes close to a small house at the edge of this path.

At the next junction, stay on the path heading right and continue downhill until you reach a fork in the path, where you turn right. Continue straight on this downhill path, ignoring the branches to the right and left, until you reach the bottom of the valley and the Claie stream.

(10) Cross the stream and continue straight ahead up the path. Ignore a turn-off on the right and join the tarmac road further up.

(11) Cross the road and take the Chemin de Fontberard straight ahead, heading downhill. At the junction, continue straight ahead, walk past the school on your left, then turn left, passing in front of the entrance to the retirement home.

(12) Immediately after, continue to the right downhill along Chemin de l'Église. Pass the entrance to the castle and continue straight on to reach the church car park, the starting point of this walk

Hike today in the rain. The description is accurate except for a small path that we probably missed at a place called "Le Baude". No big deal, we turned right 100 metres further on. Between points 6 and 9, there was a lot of water on the trail. At point 9, we left the trail to have lunch at Sonnay Au Petit Glacier (booking recommended) and returned via the valley, avoiding the descent to point 10 due to the weather and the difficulties described in other reviews. In dry weather, the hike should not present any major difficulties, except for the first climb, but it is really worth it for the setting of the old village.

There is also a very well-equipped picnic area with a beautiful view and a map at point 9.

A quiet, fairly easy route that takes you past several beautiful monuments and castles.
There are two issues, however:
- the path at the end of the route is very rutted and, with the rain over the last few days, slippery and a bit dangerous.
- part of this final section is completely flooded (despite there having been no heavy rain).

A wide forest path; a fairly easy walk, unless you reach sections 9 and 10. Otherwise, you’ll have to turn back or climb straight up through the brambles and broom. I’ve never reached section 10 when following the directions.

"9) At the house, just before reaching the tarmac road, take a dirt track on the right that passes close to a small house at the edge of this track. (That’s fine)

At the next junction, stay on the path that heads right and continue downhill (that’s not right)

until you reach a path junction where you turn right. Continue straight on this downhill path, ignoring the branches to the right and left, to reach the bottom of the valley and the Claie stream."

The path disappears at the top of a valley with limited access. Right in the middle of fallen trees littering the ground. Lots of fallen trees. So I turned back at 9 and followed the road back towards 11, as time was running out and the police might have...

So, a lot of tarmac...

A lovely route that starts on small, quiet tarmac roads, allowing you to see castles and pretty villages in the Dauphiné. Magnificent 360-degree views over the ridges stretching from the Belledonne Massif to the Cévennes – a real treat if the weather is clear.

Between points 5 and 6, before reaching the hamlet of La Feytaz, you’re invited to visit ‘La Madone’ – it’s a detour of barely 400 metres there and back and well worth a look; what’s more, you can stop there for a picnic as the spot is equipped for it.

The second part of the route follows fairly wide paths that are easy to follow, though there is often a lot of mud between points 8 and 9 (feel free to follow the route to the right or left – there are small tracks there).
Be careful at point 9, just after passing the houses by the roadside: there’s a path on the right which you should ignore; carry on straight ahead to go downhill and reach the junction, then continue to follow the route description, which is quite detailed.

Thank you for posting this route – it’s really great; a lovely day out.

Too many twists and turns in the forest – difficult for the author to describe, and easy for hikers to get lost
Problems with the Visorando app, which kept freezing?
So, to be on the safe side, between 9 and 11 I chose to take the small country lanes, which were easier to spot on the map, quiet and pleasant, with no problems!
