Route de découverte de Kientzheim

There are two villages called Kientzheim in Alsace. This route takes you around the small village situated in the commune of Kayserberg. This charming little village is entirely surrounded by ramparts. The route takes you along the northern section of the ramparts as well as through the village’s inner streets. Among the unmissable sights within the village are: the Chapel of Saints Felix and Regulus, the old smithy, the Porte du Lalli, the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows, not to mention the chariot, which marks the end of the route. As the route is short, you can round off this exploration with a visit to Sigolsheim and Ammerschwihr.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at Place de la 5e Division Blindée

(S/E) From the car park, take the Promenade des Remparts on the left. Walk past the Tour des Bourgeois and along the sports ground. Cross Rue de l’Ancien Hôpital and you’ll come to another street (note a wayside cross and a fountain on the left).

(1) Continue along the Promenade des Remparts. Walk past the Tour des Fripons, then pass the entrance to the Chapelle Saints-Félix et Régule on your right to reach the Porte du Lalli.

(2) Go through the gate and turn right onto Rue de la Chapelle. Walk past the chapel and its cemetery and continue along the street until you reach Place Schwendi.

(3) Cross the Grand’Rue, passing the old smithy on your left. Pass the well on your right and, at the junction, turn left down Rue Philippe Aimé de Goldbéry. At the junction with the Château des Ifs, carry straight on and pass the former estate of the Stammler nobles. Cross the stream and continue right onto Rue du Baron de Castex. At the fork in the road, turn right onto Rue des Bains. Pass the washhouse and continue along this street. At the end of the street, turn right onto the Grand’Rue, then head towards Place du Lieutenant Dutilh and the town hall. Continue to the left, then, at the pedestrian gate, keep to the right along a path leading to the Tour des Fripons.

(4) Return to Place du Lieutenant Dutilh via the same route and head back up Grand’Rue on the right, passing the village’s oldest house and the former inn “Aux trois Rois Mages”. Then head down Rue du Hohlandsbourg on the left; at the end of the street, turn right onto Rue du Baron de Castex, then right again onto Rue des Vieux Moulins to rejoin the Grand’Rue at the end. Turn left to reach the Church of Notre-Dame des Douleurs and its war memorial.

(5) Continue up the Grand’Rue, passing in front of Reichenstein Castle. As you leave the village, note the Second World War ‘Char Renard’ tank on your left, then turn right towards the car park (S/E).
