Route d'Ammerschwihr découverte

Ammerschwihr is a small wine-growing village situated between Colmar and Kaysersberg. This village is often overlooked and is merely a stopover on the way to Colmar and Kaysersberg. However, there are many interesting cultural sites to discover, such as the Tour des Voleurs, Saint-Wendelin Chapel, the Porte Haute, Saint-Martin’s Church and Saint-Éloi Chapel. This short historical route takes in all these sites. The route is very short and can be combined with visits to Kienthzeim and Sigolsheim.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at the junction of the Grand’Rue and the Route du Vin.

(S/E) Head out onto the Grand’Rue; note the information plaque on the Place du 18 Décembre, then turn right to walk past the Tour des Fripons and cross the Route du Vin. At the wayside shrine, turn right onto Rue des Charretiers, then right onto Rue de Kienthzeim until you reach another wayside shrine.

(1) Cross the Rue de Colmar (D415) and take the D11.I opposite. At Square René Kuehn, turn right onto Rue de la 5e Division Blindée and then left onto Rue du Village Neuf. At the first junction, keep left and cross Rue du Tir to follow Rue du Kaefferkopf. Then continue straight ahead until you emerge into the vineyard. Head up to the right, then keep left until you reach the chapel of the old village of Meywihr.

(2) Turn back, then keep to the right and then to the left to pass close to the ruins of Meywihr Castle. Continue along Schlossweg and keep left onto Rue du Château. Cross Rue du Tir again before continuing left onto Rue du Village Neuf. At the end, turn right to reach Saint-Wendelin Chapel.

(3) Turn your back on the chapel and head left towards the Porte Haute, passing close to Square Miss Thérèse Bonney, the forester’s house and the Jardin des Vignes. Just after the gate, turn left onto the Passage des Cigognes. At the end, turn left, then right onto Rue du Rempart. Walk past the Tour des Bourgeois, keep to the left, then take the second street on the right after the tower (Rue de l’Ancien Hôpital). Continue straight on until you reach the ruins of the old town hall.

Walk down the Grand’Rue on the left, passing the Fontaine de l’Homme Sauvage and the Place du Marché. At the next fountain, turn left up Rue des Cigognes and walk past a plaque dedicated to Edmond Nevissas. Pass the bakery on your left, then turn left onto Rue des Chasseurs Besombes et Brunet. Continue straight on until you reach Saint-Martin’s Church.

(4) Keep to the left, then turn right to pass a plaque commemorating the American soldiers who helped liberate the town in 1944. Turn right onto Rue du Rempart, then turn left and cut across the Route du Vin to reach the cemetery. Turn back, follow the Wine Route to the left, then, at the next bend, take the small path on the left before heading right along the Walbach. Continue right onto Impasse des Amandier, then left onto Rue de la Gare. Stay on this street until you reach Saint-Eloi Chapel, passing the cultural plaque dedicated to the former railway station.

(5) Turn round and walk back up the street, then continue straight ahead to the car park (S/E)
