Route de découverte de Kaysersberg

Kaysersberg is considered one of the most beautiful villages in France. Situated at the entrance to the Weiss Valley, this village retains streets and alleyways with authentic charm, featuring many very old and colourful half-timbered houses. The town also has a history closely linked to the Middle Ages, as evidenced by its castle and the remains of fortifications such as the Tour de la Porte Haute. A major tourist destination, this village attracts several thousand visitors every year. This tour aims to introduce you to the historic centre of Kaysersberg, taking in other points of interest such as Kaysersberg Church, the fortified bridge, the Maison Loewert and the Albert Schweitzer Centre.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park along Rue de l'Ancienne Gare.

(S/E) Head towards the street on the right. At the bend, you’ll find a wayside cross on the right and Rue du Général de Gaulle on the left. Take the latter and follow it to the town hall square.

(1) Turn right, pass between the buildings and under the archway to reach the Kaysersberg vineyard. Facing the vineyard, turn left towards the playground and take the path that winds its way up to Kaysersberg Castle.

(2) Climb to the top of the keep for the panoramic view, then head back down to the town hall square via the same route.

(1) Turn right onto Rue du Général de Gaulle to reach the church. After visiting the church, walk past its entrance and turn right to reach the Chapelle Saint-Michel and the Carré militaire.

(3) Return to the church square and head right onto Rue du Général de Gaulle, passing the fountain and Maison Loewert. At the former public butcher’s shop, Maison des Bains and Rue des Forgerons, head towards the fortified bridge on the left.

(4) Cross the river, then turn right to view the Oberhof Chapel from the outside (it is private property). Return to the bridge and turn right onto Rue du Général de Gaulle. Continue along the street, which passes the Protestant church and the Albert Scheitzer Centre, and runs between a park and a car park at the edge of the historic centre. Continue along the same street until you reach the roundabout.

(5) Take the exit on the right onto Route de Lapoutroie. Ignore all junctions, including Rue du Geisbourg on the right, before heading straight on to the bend. Take the bend, then turn left to see the Saint-Michel Chapel.

(6) Turn back, turn right onto Route de Lapoutroie, then take Rue du Geisbourg on the left to cross the Fecht. Pass one junction and you’ll come to a footpath on the right.

(7) Take this path on the right. Then continue straight on until you reach the greenway, running alongside the Weiss.

(8) Walk down alongside the river, passing a white willow. At the end, continue along Rue de la Flieh. Then take the sixth fork on the right to reach a tower. Continue until you reach Rue de la Flieh again. Turn right onto this street, then right again at the junction to cross the river. Cross Place Gouraud, then Rue du Général de Gaulle, to enter a park and see the Tour de la Porte Haute directly ahead.

(9) Return to Rue du Général de Gaulle and head down this street to the right, towards the fortified bridge. A few metres before the bridge, turn right onto Rue des Potiers. At the first junction, turn right onto the street and cross Rue Jérome Gebwiller. Just after this, you’ll see a tower on your right; turn left onto the footpath before reaching the Kessler Tower.

(10) Continue along the path, then head straight ahead onto Rue du Collège. Pass in front of Maison Huffel and take the next right. Cross Rue des Ecoles and turn right onto Rue de la Commanderie. Then, take the street on the left and pass in front of Maison Buchelé and the Manoir d’Etienne de Bavière. At the end, follow Rue de l’Ancienne Gendarmerie to the left.

(11) At the junction with the Geiler Monument, head straight ahead and, at the end, you’ll reach the crossroads from the outward journey. Turn right twice, cross the entire car park to see, at the end on the right, a final tower.

(12) Then return to the car park (S/E).
