Description of the walk

Access to car park

From Haguenau town centre, follow signs for Soufflenheim. Once you reach the D1063 (Route de Soufflenheim), turn left onto Route de Schwabwiller, which leads directly to the Gros-Chêne car park.

Green Ring trail

(S/E) Start the trail that leaves from the left of the inn, after the Club Vosgien signs.

(1) Keep left at the fork where there are two benches.
A few metres further on, turn right onto the forest path, following the alternative route. At the intersection with a path, turn left onto it and continue straight ahead.

(2) At the end of the path, turn left onto the track and continue straight ahead, ignoring the tracks to the left and right. After a little over 100 m, the track becomes a path that veers slightly to the right and runs alongside the Eberbach stream for a few metres. Cross the footbridge and continue straight ahead on the path.

(3) At the intersection of four paths marked by various Club Vosgien signs, go straight ahead and follow the path in a straight line for 850 m. At the T-junction, turn right onto Allée de Schierlach.

(4) At the intersection of four paths, leave Allée de Schierlach by turning left onto the path.
At the next intersection, turn right, then after 400 m turn right again onto the path to go around the plot.

(5) Turn left to return to Allée de Schierlach. After 350 m, turn right onto the path.

(6) At the intersection with Allée Forestière du Gros-Chêne, turn right onto the latter. Continue straight ahead.

(3) At the intersection of four paths marked by various Club Vosgien signs, continue straight ahead.

(7) At the intersection with Route de Schwabwiller (tarmac road), turn left onto the latter. Finally, cross the bridge over the Eberbach stream to return to the Gros-Chêne area (S/E).

Notes

Worth a visit

Shortly before (1), you can see a young birch forest on the left that grew naturally after Storm Lothar in December 1999.
After the fork, in spring, you can find lily of the valley, two-leaved helleborine, Solomon's seal and many other flowers, adding a whole palette of colours to your walk.

Along the route, you will notice several American red oaks surrounding the pine forests and lining the paths. Planted in the 1960s, they act as firebreaks, limiting the speed at which fires spread through the pine stands. Their green foliage in spring and summer contrasts with the salmon-coloured bark of the Haguenau pines.

On the path that skirts the plot at (4), between April and July you can find marsh irises in the ditches on either side of the path, which always grow in damp environments.

The impressive row of Scots pines after the right-hand bend at (5) is a striking feature of the landscape: the stand was completely destroyed in 1999. This very high density of trees in young stands is deliberate on the part of foresters in order to encourage the slenderness of the stems (competition for light) while allowing natural pruning.

The surroundings of the Gros Chêne forest lane (6) are rich in colour: spring marks the flowering season for red campion, daisies and elderflowers.

A short walk to fill the afternoon... in some places there's a lot of mud when it rains... after that it was just to stretch our legs, but not a very interesting route except for getting shot at during hunting season.

The Haguenau Forest is superbly equipped for cyclists and hikers. At Gros Chêne, you can pick up a map showing all the marked trails.

Hello, please note that the route crosses a stream, but there is no bridge. I was able to cross it on 6/10/2024 because there was little water and previous walkers had kindly submerged pieces of tree trunks. Otherwise, the route is easy.

An easy route that can be lengthened or shortened depending on your fitness level. A very pleasant shaded route in hot weather. A nice little walk with very few hikers on the trail.

This forest route is lovely. With 85% of the route in the shade, it was particularly pleasant during these very hot days.
The route is flat and accessible to all families, even those with small children, as the detailed map allows you to change, shorten or lengthen the route.
The return to the Gros Chêne is also a highlight: discovering this thousand-year-old tree trunk and then enjoying a cold drink in the local inn (but don't forget to bring water in your bag!!!).
Thank you.
