Park in the Gros Chêne car park to the north-east of Haguenau.
(S/E) Start the trail between the picnic area and the viewing platform, south-west of the junction of Route de l’Ermite and Route de Schwabwiller. Follow the Red Cross markings; the trail will take you to the car park and the start of the fitness trail.
(1) Take the fitness trail, which runs straight ahead to the first forest track.
(2) Leave the fitness trail, take the forest track to the left, then take the first path on the right towards the Monument du Chêne, following the Red Cross markings. The path is dotted with seven stone markers bearing quotations and will take you back to the fitness trail route.
(3) Turn left back onto the fitness trail and stay on it until you reach the forest track.
(4) Turn right onto the tarmac road; this road is closed to motor vehicles. Turn left towards Carrefour Perreaud. On your right, you will see the first blockhouse, a remnant of the Maginot Line, and a second one a few metres further on, on your right, at the crossroads.
(5) Cross the tarmac road to Schwabwiller and take the forest track opposite until you reach the first junction.
Take the path on the right marked with a Red Heart and Blue Ring. At the first junction, keep left, following the Red Heart markings, and continue straight on until the end of the path, a T-junction.
(6) Turn left and then take the dirt track on the right until you reach the tarmac road, with a blockhouse on either side. Continue left along the tarmac road (which has little traffic). After 750 m, you will cross the Eberbach stream; continue along the tarmac road for a further 650 m.
(7) Take the forest path on your left (marked with a Blue Cross), Allée du Gros Chêne (stay on this forest path for 1.6 km until you reach the Carrefour Perreaud). You will reach a junction at elevation 139.
(8) Continue straight on for another 100 m (marked with a Yellow Ring) along the Discovery Trail, cross the small bridge over the ditch on the right, and take the Discovery Trail which will lead you to the tarmac road, Route de Schwabwiller.
Turn left, then take the first forest track/car park on the right to reach the tarmac road, Route de Brendel.
(9) Continue along the tarmac road to the left and after 50 m follow the Discovery Trail to the right, crossing the small bridge over the ditch (Yellow Ring markings). Keep following the Yellow Ring markings.
Go straight on to reach the preserved Grand Hêtre, then turn left and, at the tarmac road, turn right, crossing the Eberbach bridge.
(10) Immediately go down the steps on the right to reach the baptistery, then continue on to Saint-Arbogast Chapel and the Gros Chêne.
From the chapel, you will see the playground and the car park at the Gros Chêne (S/E).
. I’ll find a way round this, but first I need to find an alternative and re-create the route on Visorando. As I’ve got other priorities at the moment, I’ll try to do it this summer
