Description of the walk

Access to the car park: On leaving the village of École towards Jarsy, turn right at a hairpin bend onto the small road that follows the course of the Chéran; the car park is 2.5 km away at the junction leading to the Chapelle de Bellevaux; access via the very narrow road to the chapel is restricted.

(S/E) From the car park, follow the small road up towards the Notre-Dame de Bellevaux Chapel. After crossing the bridge over the stream, turn left to reach the chapel.

(1) Continue uphill along the path which, at the start, runs parallel to the stream, cross the ruins of the village of La Chapelle, then join a track.

(2) Continue uphill along the track to the right, reaching a junction at a place called “Fond des prés”.

(3) Continue straight ahead, ignoring the path to the right leading to Chalet Bottier. Climb steadily along the path that runs through the Ruisseau de la Lanche valley and heads towards Mont Pécloz. You will reach a crossroads a few dozen metres from Chalet des Gardes.

(4) Head left up the steep path to reach the clearly visible Col d'Armène.

(5) At the pass, head right to reach Mont d'Arménaz.

(6) From the summit, descend by following the ridge southwards. You will reach a small pass not named on the IGN map.

(7) Head off to the right towards the west along the path, passing close to the Chalet d'Armène and then the Chalet des Gardes, and reach the junction you passed on the way up.

(4) Descend via the ascent route to return to the car park (S/E).

The start is a bit tricky, but the rest of the walk is fine. Take care in wet weather

You might be able to squeeze in a quick round trip to the summit of Pecloz, provided you haven’t used up too much energy on the last climb, which is quite steep and in full sun!
