Mont Pécloz and Mont d'Arménaz loop

The most beautiful of the Baujus peaks! Loop hike Mont Pecloz 2197m and Mont d'Armenaz 2158m.
Please note: The descent from Mont Pécloz is rather tricky (exposure to rockfalls + some passages requiring the use of your hands).

Description of the walk

Coming from Le Châtelard, head towards École then Jarsy. At the bridge, turn right towards La Chapelle de Bellevaux. Park in the first car park (Couvent car park).

(S/E) From the car park, turn right onto Route de la Chapelle de Bellevaux until you reach the first path on the left.

(.1) Take the first path on the left, then the track on the right.

(2) Continue along this road and, after several hairpin bends, take the path on the left

(3) Leave the track and take a path. After the first bend, head for "Le Replat d'en Bas" on the IGN map. The path is well marked. Follow it, ignoring any paths that branch off to the right or left, and head for "Le Replat d'en Haut" and Varapet (1623m) on the IGN map

.4:: Leave the forest and the rock will come into view. Follow the markings to the summit. The route is exposed and falling is not an option. There are a few tricky sections (use your hands or look for easier passages).

(5) From the summit, the descent to L'Armenaz is obvious. Still exposed with a small tricky passage, the rest is mainly small stones rolling underfoot that make it difficult, so watch out for falling rocks.
Continue along the ridge to the summit of L'Armenaz (nothing difficult) except that it is very steep!

(6) From the summit of L'Armenaz, the descent is relatively straightforward. Continue the descent to reach the Chalet d'Armène and the Chalet des Gardes

(7) After Chalet des Gardes, turn left and head to Chapelle de Bellevaux, where the miraculous spring will give you wings to reach the car park

(8) Continue to the fork in the road on the way there.

(3) Take the same route back to the Couvent car park (S/E).

Practical information

No water source (except on the way back to the chapel, but you will already have reached the end of the hike by then).
A piece of rope at the bottom of your bag may come in handy, as may an ice axe for the end of the very steep grassy climb up Pécloz.

In the nearby area

On the way there, it's a feast for the eyes.
On the way back, it's the same, with of course a visit to Notre Dame de Bellevaux and the ruined village destroyed by the Germans during the Second World War. A dictaphone is available to listen to this terrible story.

I wasn't disappointed with my first hike in Les Bauges. It was superb!
However, it's quite a climb, so it's best to be fit and well equipped.
It's best to do it in the direction indicated.
Thanks to the author for this beautiful trail!

A challenging hike undertaken solo by an amateur hiker on a scorching hot day. The scenery is superb, the 360-degree view majestic, and there are very few other hikers. As mentioned in the description, falling is strongly discouraged, whether climbing or descending Pécloz, and I believe wearing a helmet is essential if in doubt. The rest of the route is much easier.
I do not recommend doing this with children, but I highly recommend it for those with stamina!

Superb 360° panorama from Mont Pecloz (Mont Blanc in all its glory, Tournette, Charvin, Trélod, Grande Casse, Granier, etc.). I climbed up via the ridge (forest trail then ridges with beautiful views and a comfortable path (only one place where you need to use your hands). A dozen or so sturdy chamois, several with "sign" collars (search area sign a little beyond Mount Armenaz). No one on the way up and a total of about ten people on the way down, most of them lying in the grass in the bright sunshine. A very steep section at the start of the descent from Pecloz to Armenaz (be careful of falling rocks) then a stony path. 8°C at 8am at the start, ~26°C at the top and in the valley, 19°C at the car park on the way back. Walking at a leisurely pace: 3 hours 45 minutes to reach Mount Pecloz, 4 hours 30 minutes to Armenaz (excluding picnic) and 6 hours 50 minutes in total, speeding up a little on the descent. One of the most beautiful panoramas I have seen in the region and a very pleasant, varied walk.

We did a very beautiful hike in the opposite direction to the description without any particular problems. However, you need to be very careful when descending Mont Pécloz, which we found more difficult on the "convent car park" side (longer and more exposed) than on the Mont Arménaz side. You should not be prone to vertigo. Not recommended for children and should not be attempted in rainy or foggy weather.

The climb up the ridge, although unmarked, is easy in terms of route. When you leave the forest, the slope becomes steeper and offers beautiful views. As a result, people who are prone to vertigo may find it difficult from this point onwards. It should be noted that exposure increases significantly after rain and should not be taken lightly.
The descent is not difficult. The path first stretches along the ridges to the Arménaz pass, passing by Mont Arménaz and the Rochers de l'Arpette. It then descends into a long valley to Notre Dame de Bellevaux and its village with its sinister design (you can refill your water bottles here), which is explained via an audio terminal.

Steep climb (approximately 1,200 metres over 5/6 kilometres)
Bear in mind the return journey: a long, steep descent over difficult terrain...
In any case, it's a superb hike

A very beautiful hike in varied environments with magnificent views of the Alps and Mont Blanc.

Regarding the description, I noticed a few minor inconsistencies between the description and the route:
- WPT 6: The summit of Mont Pécloz is located at the pass between Mont Pécloz and Mont d'Arménaz, not at the summit of Mont Pécloz (elevation 2,197 metres)
- WPT 9: Bellevaux Chapel is also not correctly positioned. Bellevaux Chapel (photo 2 of the guidebook) is 100 metres lower down in the valley; unless you turn around and climb back up to the place called "la chapelle" 100 metres higher, you will then join the ascent route at WPT2

A truly beautiful route with magnificent views of the peaks. An added bonus is to extend the hike slightly by continuing along the ridge once you reach Mont d'Armenaz. This adds a small triangle, but the descent is easier with better views along this alternative route.

a magnificent hike, in my opinion one of the most beautiful in the Bauges. Be careful though, as the trail is challenging and should not be attempted in bad weather or with people who are afraid of heights or are not experienced hikers.

A beautiful hike, best done in dry weather and in the direction indicated. Access to Pecloz (ascent and descent) is a little technical (hands needed), but the view from the summit is so worth it! Once you've descended, the rest of the route to Arménaz is easy. We saw a few chamois along the way.

A very beautiful loop, best done in dry weather and on dry ground, especially the grassy ridge leading to Pecloz
Very wild on this Friday in October. Only encountered two people on the trail... and about 50 chamois!
The rails between Pecloz and Armenaz are breathtaking.

Hike completed on 21/09, in magnificent weather, once the fog had cleared
The climb up Mont Pecloz is still quite difficult, with some sections requiring the use of your hands. The view towards Mont Blanc, Les Écrins, etc. is sublime from both mountains.
I only encountered five hikers on my way down, so it's not crowded, much to my delight

Superb loop. I hesitated to do it in the other direction, thinking I would encounter passages that were too difficult. Clearly, don't take young children. Otherwise, you can quickly reach the summit in 2.5 hours, and almost the entire climb is in the shade. Superb view. Thank you
