Tirière Mountain Pasture Route

A hike offering a variety of points of interest at the bottom of a valley far from the main routes: glacial cirque, torrents, mountain pastures, larch forests, and paths that are sometimes steep or offer peaceful views.

Description of the walk

Park upstream of the Chalet Hôtel du Gioberney, north of the D430T.

(S/E) Head northwards; after a few dozen metres, at the fork, keep right on the path then continue straight on to cross the Gioberney torrent.

(1) Take the footbridge and continue along the path running roughly parallel to the stream. Pass below the Cabane du Gioberney, let the path to the Refuge du Pigeonnier carry on, then turn sharply right to reach a second footbridge.

(2) Cross the footbridge, ignore the path on the right which follows the left bank of the stream, and begin the ascent along a winding path through a larch forest. You will reach a plateau; continue across the mountain pasture to reach the Tirière Hut (ruins).

(3) Pass the hut and begin the descent towards the Torrent du Pis Beaumette. You will reach a junction.

(4) Ignore the direction of the Cabane du Pis (about 200m to the east), turn due west to continue the descent along the winding path overlooking the stream. Join the Ministre path.

(5) Turn right towards the north-east onto this balcony path, which eventually climbs up to the Chalet Hôtel du Gioberney (S/E).

An interesting, though little-known route with a beautiful view overlooking the Gioberney refuge (with the added bonus of seeing helicopters refuelling the nearby refuges...including transporting a piano to the one in Vallompierre)
That said, from the plateau, there are magnificent views of the surrounding valleys...and the peaks too!
The descent to the Pis hut is sometimes a little tricky, due to sections of the path being sloping and partially collapsed
Easy return via the Ministre trail

A lovely walk.
We walked from the start to point 4 and then turned back to enjoy the view overlooking Giobernay.

A lovely walk, especially the section overlooking GIOBERNEY. The only slight difficulty is finding the path after crossing the stream via the footbridge. Follow it closely along the left bank for about 150 metres before you reach the climb. A relatively long and challenging walk.

A really lovely, little-known hike, but one that’s definitely worth doing.
Please note: it’s quite a long hike at high altitude; the Giobernay refuge looks very ‘small’ from down below.
Highly recommended.
No difficulty
Highly recommended in the first fortnight of July when the rhododendrons are in bloom.
