Vallonpierre Refuge - Chabournéou Refuge

A beautiful climb to the Vallonpierre refuge is followed by a superb crossing that leads to the Chabournéou refuge, in high mountain terrain beneath the elegant north face of the Sirac.

Description of the walk

Park in the Le Crépon car park, just below the Chalet-Hôtel du Gioberney.

(S/E) Leave the car park and join the D480t to find the hiking signs on your left.

There are no markings, but there are signposts at the crossroads
Take the path on the left that descends towards the Refuge de Vallonpierre.
Cross the stream via the footbridge and climb back up to a crossroads. Leave the path on the left that leads to the Refuge du Gioberney and continue straight ahead towards the Refuge de Vallonpierre via the Sentier du Ministre.
The trail climbs gently up the mountainside and joins a crossroads higher up.

(1) Continue straight ahead, keeping towards the Refuge de Vallonpierre. 200m further on, cross a footbridge and continue south until the next crossroads.

(2) Turn right onto the path that descends towards the stream marked Col de Vallonpierre (this time!)
Cross some large boulders and continue across the meadow. At the next junction, leave the path on the right and continue left towards the Refuge de Vallonpierre. Further on, cross another footbridge. The long winding climb will then begin.
Almost at the top, another footbridge and the last switchbacks lead to a shepherd's hut. The last few metres are a gentle slope down to a large meadow and a signpost.

(3) Make a round trip to the right to the Vallonpierre Refuge and its small lake.

(4) Admire the landscape from this refuge nestled at the foot of a red granite peak with the Sirac opposite.
From the refuge, return to the sign you saw on arrival.

(3) Continue right towards the Refuge de Chabournéou, heading towards a small gully.
Cairns will help you find your way, which is not always easy among the rocks.
The descent begins with large boulders, followed by a short passage where you will need to use your hands.
Continue along the path, which passes a ledge that is aerial at times but never very exposed.
N.B.: Throughout this section, you must be careful and watch where you put your feet.
At one point, the path turns right to cross a rock; a few red paint marks show the way.
The trail resumes on the mountainside below the Sirac. Cross a stream fed by a snowfield above, then another. Two small handholds will help you down the short descent to continue over the rocks.
Cross four streams in succession, the last of which is overlooked by a majestic waterfall, then a fifth a little further on.
Continue the descent without difficulty to the Refuge de Chabournéou.

(5) Turn left onto the path that winds down to the Refuge du Gioberney.
After crossing the stream, the descent becomes easier and the trail returns to the same junction as on the way up.

(2) Continue straight ahead on the same path as on the way up to reach the car park (S/E).

We did this hike in two days, climbing from Gioberney to the Vallonpierre refuge where we spent the night. The climb is steep but not difficult, although exposed to the sun. Vallonpierre is a magnificent site. We wanted to go to the pass and the peak but unfortunately there was a storm. Otherwise, we received a warm welcome at the refuge.
The next day, we went to the Chabournéou refuge. There were a few exposed sections to negotiate, but they were well secured, and even with little experience of this type of terrain, we managed to get through. We didn't like the sections crossing various streams with just a plank, but luckily it was early September and there was less water than in spring!

A wonderful hike with wonderfully detailed descriptions. I was lucky enough to do it in good weather with no wind, so I was treated to a splendid reflection of the refuge, the rocks and the peaks in the cute little lake of Vallonpierre.
The description of the aerial passages is perfectly worded. It is never very exposed, while remaining safe, of course. I am slightly prone to vertigo, but whether climbing or descending, I felt completely at ease, helped by the handrails.
I also found that the walking time was about average.
I highly recommend this route. However, it is only suitable for people who are used to this type of terrain. For those who want a more leisurely outing, the round trip to the Vallonpierre refuge is also magnificent. Even easier is a round trip to the Chabournéou refuge, which also offers stunning scenery!

Magnificent! Brand new footbridges at the bottom (thanks to the benefactors of the Parc des Ecrins!), but watch out for the snow bridges between the two refuges, which are melting rapidly over the torrents! Getting around them quickly becomes like climbing on unstable ground. The last footbridge is just a single plank. Very popular hike. Beautiful view of Gioberney and Les Rouies. Two refuges, two different environments!

Circuit starting from the Clot Xavier Blanc refuge in the direction of Vallonpierre-Chabourneou
Beautiful weather, views of the surrounding glaciers and waterfalls
The climb is best done early in the day as there is little shade, and we arrived at the refuge where we stopped for a while to enjoy the surroundings. The omelette with black trumpet mushrooms was delicious!
Walk to Chabourneou without any major difficulties, cable in the two slightly more tricky sections and numerous stream crossings to cool off.
Passed by the Gioberney refuge and the Voile de la Mariée waterfall on the way back
Our journey time isn't particularly significant as we took a break of over two hours in Vallonpierre and several "foot baths" in the waterfalls

A very beautiful hike from Chabournéou to Vallonpierre under sunny skies and blue skies.
It took me 1 hour 40 minutes from the car park to reach the Chabournéou refuge.
It took about 1 hour 30 minutes to reach the Vallonpierre refuge via the somewhat exposed balcony.
Most of the route between the two refuges is uphill, but nothing too difficult.
There are two slightly exposed sections where you can use the cables attached to the rock for support.
The arrival at the Vallonpierre refuge, walking along the small lake and the view of the Sirac, convinced me to stop there for a snack break. The refuge was busy, but it was possible to sit alone by the small lake.
It took me about two hours to get back to the car park. Total time for the hike: 6 hours 20 minutes.
I plan to do it in the opposite direction and include a return trip to the Col de Vallonpierre.

A sublime circuit, like others in the opposite direction from Chabournéou to Vallonpierre. From there, we extended our trip with a round trip to the Vallonpierre pass, which was really worth it: lots of marmots and a superb panorama.

I regretted that the description and comments discouraged one person in my group who was prone to vertigo. In reality, there aren't really any problematic sections.
The hike was reasonably busy and truly superb.

We did the tour via Vallonpierre and then Chabournéou. The scenery was magnificent, but you should allow an extra half hour to 45 minutes longer than stated. Great!

We preferred to do the circuit in the following direction: Chabournéou refuge, then Vallonpierre refuge. We took our time and slept in Chabournéou. A very nice little CAF refuge.
the trail from Chabournéou to Vallonpierre runs along a ledge beneath the Sirac glacier. The scenery is truly magnificent: passing beneath snowfields, crossing streams, handrails... it felt like high mountain climbing. And as I (aged 74!) didn't feel up to doing it in the downhill direction, I don't regret my choice. We had superb weather and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. It wasn't too long, which meant that my daughter-in-law was able to do the pass and the Vallonpierre peak in the afternoon. Night at the refuge.
there were few people from Chabournéou to Vallonpierre (two people going in the same direction and three in the opposite direction)
however, it was much busier in Vallonpierre! Many people go up for the day to see the lake and then come back down.
i did this hike with my daughter-in-law and my two granddaughters (aged 16 and 12)

This route is popular for reaching the Vallonpierre refuge from the car park, but is very quiet between Vallonpierre and Chabournéou as it is much more technical with some tricky sections.
A very beautiful route with a superb viewpoint between the two refuges.

Superb hike with magnificent views and a high mountain atmosphere. I did the loop, first passing by the Chabourneou refuge and then Vallonpierre, which makes the climb easier with a few stops along the way. The sections with cables are also easier to manage on the way up.

Very beautiful hike! ...
The climb to the magnificent Vallon Pierre refuge was easy: a slow, steady ascent on a well-maintained GR trail.
The connection between the two refuges is then a little more challenging on a "trail" marked by numerous cairns.
There are a few tricky sections but they are equipped with cables. You pass by snowfields, quite close to the Sirac glacier. You can see the Chabournéou refuge from a long way off: they have excellent blueberry tart! ... The return trip was easy but very sunny, fortunately with a few stream crossings to cool off.
This is a must-do hike if you're in the area.

We did the crossing in the opposite direction to the description (not a bad choice) and at the start of the season (not bad, but you have to be prepared for a few snowfields, which make the route a little more exposed). Great atmosphere under the Sirac and the passage through Vallonpierre was as enjoyable as ever.

Magnificent hike!!!!! After setting off in fog from the Gioberney mountain refuge, we were treated to the wonderful surprise of discovering the peaks. Spectacular scenery.
The trails were very well marked under the Sirac.
Definitely worth doing, just with a little training!!!!
