Kolben Chapel – Rainkopf – Rothenbachkopf route

This beautiful, not overly long hike follows trails and offers, from the ascent to the ridge towards Rainkopf and then Rothenbachkopf, a panoramic view of the Vosges and, weather permitting, even the Bernese Alps.

Description of the walk

To reach the starting point, from Metzeral, head towards Mittlach, and in the village, at the “Valneige” restaurant, take the small road on the right. Continue to the car park at the Kolben chapel, approximately 2 km away.

(S/E) From the car park, take the track heading north-east, then join the Yellow Cross marked trail which climbs to the left. This climbs fairly steadily up a steep but not excessive gradient.

(1) Once you reach the Altenweiher lake/dam, turn left, cross the dam and continue along the Yellow Cross-marked trail. Leaving the lake, the trail climbs gently at first before becoming much steeper with tight hairpin bends. The gradient eases as you pass through Pferrey before reaching the small pass of Rainkopf near the Club Vosgien du Rainkopf mountain hut and the Firstmiss farmhouse inn.

(2) At this junction, take the path on the left which climbs to Rainkopf.

(3) At the summit, there is a stunning 360° view. Continue in the same direction (south) down to the Col du Rothenbach.

(4) Continuing in the same direction, follow the red-white-red Red Rectangle markings and then the Red Disc which leads up to Rothenbachkopf, where the view is just as stunning.

(5) Begin the descent along the edge of the ridge (no danger: the path does not run right along the edge) whilst continuing to follow the Red Disc markings to the Steinwasen farmhouse inn.

(6) There, turn left and follow the Blue Cross markings on a continuous, gentle descent.

(7) Turn slightly left, still following the Blue Cross markings, towards Kolbenwasen.

(8) Before reaching the road, don’t miss the rock marking GPS point 448°N/7°E.

Once you reach the road, turn right and head back to the starting point (S/E).

A lovely, well-balanced route, as the uphill section is at the start.
However, I encountered a problem on the Blue Cross descent after the Steinwasen inn. A first sign blocked the path, indicating ‘work in progress’, but I didn’t encounter any difficulties until a second section of the path (along the river) was barricaded and impassable because it was littered with felled tree trunks.
And there I struggled a bit to find a path leading to the Sapin Kolben car park.
It remains to be seen whether this is a one-off incident this year.

When coming from Metzeral towards Mittlach, do not cross the bridge in front of the Valneige hotel; instead, take the road on the right signposted "Kastelberg". This is Erbersch Street. Continue along the route.
From Lake Altenweiher towards Rainkopf, follow the Yellow Saltire (not the Yellow Cross, which I read at Collet du Rainkopf was the old signposting… even though, along the way, the Club Vosgien forgot a “Yellow Cross” 😉)! On this section of the route we encountered the only difficulty of the hike, but it was a big one! : a large tree had fallen across the path, which we managed to climb over with the help of other hikers.
A short refreshing break at the Steinwasen inn.
A very beautiful hike, mostly through the forest, with stunning panoramic views, particularly from the ridge – 10 hours in total, including a walk around Lake Altenweiher (20m), a one-hour picnic break at Rainkopf and the return journey to our lodge at the Altenhof. Signposting is quite sparse, but fortunately the junctions are clearly marked.

Having completed two hikes in early March, reaching altitudes of 1,271 m and 1,074 m – where the going was sometimes tricky and sometimes easier – we decided to attempt this hike. We were unable to go beyond the viewpoint above the lake, known as Kolbenwald, at an altitude of around 1,130 m, located between (1) and (2). The path was really not clear. It wasn’t even possible to make it out. Too much snow, no old tracks from hikers and no markings whatsoever, so when you can’t see the path... Reckless, but not mad.
We made our way back down at a leisurely pace.

It’s a shame the weather didn’t allow you to enjoy the view!

We did this hike in really bad weather (fog at Rothenbachkopf and wearing raincoats the whole way), but we still enjoyed it.
