(S/E) From the Kastelberwasen car park, near the farmhouse inn, join theGR®531path (Blue Rectangle) below. It descends through meadows towards Kerbholz. After entering the forest, the descent becomes steeper and leads to a stone chalet. The path continues to the left, but it is worth stopping for a panoramic view from the stubble field (beautiful view of the Spitzkoepfe ridge).
(1) Take theGR®531again to walk through the wooded cirque of Ammelthal towards Lake Schiessrothried. A few rocky passages, streams and several scree slopes require caution and attention. After 40 minutes, you will reach a pass at the first Spitzkoepfe. Leave the path that climbs towards the ridge on your left and continue to the right to reach the viewpoint. It offers a remarkable view of the Wormsa valley and the small Fischboedle lake below.
(2) Take theGR®531again for a winding descent. Leave the Blue Triangle trail on your left and continue to the right towards the lake dam. You are now in the heart of the magnificent Wormspel cirque dominated by the Hohneck.
(3) Just before the dam, on the right, theGR®5(Red Rectangle) runs alongside a stream (the Wormsa) towards Lake Fischboedle. After an 800m steep descent, you will reach the picturesque little lake at the foot of an impressive scree slope. Enjoy a little rest and the shelter, which is very popular in summer, then take the footbridge over the dam and turn left onto the Croix Bleue trail. After a few metres through the rocks, it joins a wide carriage road.
(4) On the left, theGR®5leads to the beautiful Wormsa valley (see round trip
variant), take the marked Croix Bleue path on the right.
(5) After 100 metres, climb up to the right for a "difficult" variant of the Croix Bleue trail (not very difficult in fact). Enjoy a beautiful climb through the forest among the mossy rocks.
(6) When you reach a crossroads, leave the trail, ignore the trail on the right that leads to Kerbholz and take the trail on the left (sometimes very grassy) marked with a blue cross and marked "Fischboedle pour votre sécurité" (for your safety) towards a forest road. You will reach it 100 metres further on in a bend. This is the Kastelberg road used by mountain bikes.
(7) Leave the path on the left that descends towards Fischboedle and Mittlach and head towards the steeply ascending path marked with a blue triangle, which goes around Kerbholtz to the south. After 800 metres and a few cattle grids in season, you will come to the intersection with a path marked with a blue cross.
(8) On your left, the Blue Cross trail leads to Lake Altenweiher. It descends gently into the forest. Leave the paths on your right. A few hairpin bends and some imposing rocks herald a steeper descent. The bucolic atmosphere should not prevent you from exercising caution. After several scree slopes, streams and rocky areas, as you approach the lake, leave the Yellow Cross marked return trail on your right. Continue to the lake.
From the dam, you can admire the Rainkopf and the wooded cirques of Pferrey and Altenweiher.
(9) Retrace your steps to find the wide yellow cross trail towards Tagweidle for a final climb up the switchbacks to Kastelberg. A beautiful scree slope and a few viewpoints allow you to admire the lake and the peaks of Rainkopf and Rothenbachkopf.
The slope levels out. You reach a crossroads. A sign invites you to turn right towards the Kastelberg farm.
(10) This is a beautiful path through a lovely beech forest, relaxing and flat, but often muddy in places. It quickly leads to the Kastelberg farm via the farm buildings and then the terrace.
