Description of the walk

Park at the sports ground at Saillant du Gua; parking is easy there.

(S/E) To start the route, take the small road leading to Essart Garin. This road heads due south and is completely flat.

(1) When you reach the Combelouve stud farm, look for a small path to the right of the road that climbs into the forest. The path joins a small road leading to a house. Continue along this road until you reach the road leading to the hamlets of Chaudemeyre and Mitonnière.

(2) Turn right onto it until you reach the first houses of Riveteyre.

(3) Turn left, cross the D8 road leading up to the Col de l'Arzelier and pass through the hamlet of Riveteyre. On leaving the hamlet, turn right and follow the small road leading to the hamlet of Les Grands Amieux.

(4) After passing under the high-voltage power line, ignore the path leading up to the left towards Les Petits Amieux and continue in the same direction. The road begins to descend, passing through the hamlet of Les Grands Amieux. Descend three hairpin bends.

(5) After the last houses, take a path on the left that leads downhill to the Champa stream.

(6) Just before you reach the tarmac road again, take a path on the left leading to the foot of the waterfall. After visiting the waterfall, retrace your steps.

(6) Return to the small road, turn left and continue down towards the village.

(7) Turn right onto Rue de la Poste, then left onto Rue du Ravier, cross the main road again and continue along the same street.

(8) Keep to the right to reach Rue de la Gresse and the starting point at the sports ground (S/E).

Notes

This walk takes place mainly on small tarmac roads or very good paths; no special equipment is required.
The site still features the remains of the Vicat company’s industrial cement-making facilities.

Worth a visit

In nearby Genevrey de Vif, you can visit the Church of Sainte-Marie, built in the 12th and 13th centuries; it is one of the best-preserved historic buildings in the region. Also worth noting in Genevrey de Vif are the former industrial buildings of the Vicat cement works, dating from the 19th century.

The hike was very pleasant, under the trees and partly along fields. The only downside was that the start of the trail was not marked and therefore difficult to find. The vegetation had grown up, probably due to lack of use, and the start was covered with branches and brambles. Once we found the start, the trail was well marked and easy to follow.

A short, easy walk – the only downside was that there were a few too many small tarmac roads. I didn’t see any hikers on this route, but there were quite a few Sunday strollers.

A short, leisurely circular route, though a bit too much on the road for my liking.
Apart from the scenery (the surrounding mountains), I didn’t find the walk very interesting.
Takes less than 2 hours.
A few directions need updating (point 4: simply state that you take the path marked ‘Le Grand Amieux’ to the left, passing under the power line; point 7: it’s first ‘rue Béranger’, which continues into ‘rue du Gravier’)

An excellent route, but bear in mind that much of it is in the open: avoid it in full sun. Signposting is average, so make sure you use your smartphone to find your way.

A very good description. It feels like a quest...
but by following the written directions, you can easily follow the whole route. I returned to the hills where my father, as a child and teenager... Alain... must have had a great time running along the paths. We completed the circular walk in four hours, including breaks. Bear in mind we had a very young child with us. I was delighted to do this circular walk with my family. For my club, I’m thinking of suggesting this walk but split into two parts: two shorter circular walks, as for children, older people, or those with health conditions, this walk might be too long.
Thank you very much in any case!

Hello Carline, and thank you for your comments.

Definite lack of signposting

Neither Visorando nor the author of the walk are responsible for the signposting on site. Were the directions in the description not sufficient to follow the route, even with faulty signposting?

There was definitely a lack of signposting, but luckily we were able to ask for directions along the way. The waterfall is well worth a visit. Not to be attempted in hot weather!
