Tour of the hamlets south of Vif

After a few modifications, I am once again offering this enjoyable hike on the hillsides, which will allow you to discover unexpected aspects of the A51 motorway as well as interesting views of the eastern side of the Vercors. You will also discover small hamlets in the south of the Grenoble metropolitan area.

Description of the walk

The starting point is located at the park-and-ride car park, bus stop lines 25 and 26.

(S/E) Leaving the car park towards Vif, take the first street on the right (rue du bois du Gua) and continue until you see a private road sign.

(1) Look for a small path on the right that climbs up and joins the railway line.

(2) After about a hundred metres, following a short descent, you will reach the tarmac road. Take the path on the right. The climb is steep but not very long, and you will pass under the A51 motorway viaduct. The climb continues until you reach a flat section.

(3) Turn right. The path climbs a little further and overlooks the motorway and the Crozet toll station. You will come to a road which you follow until you cross the hamlet of Crozet and join the D1075 road.

(4) Cross it, descend about 50 metres to the right and follow the road to the left (Rue du Viaduc), passing under the second motorway viaduct and the railway viaduct (note the contrast between the two structures).

(5) Immediately after the railway viaduct, take a path on the left, which runs alongside the viaduct, climbing slightly.
Follow this path. After the motorway rainwater collection basins, it widens and becomes a good path (there is a new viaduct on the left). You will reach a circular bend in the district road (emergency lane and telephone relay). Turn slightly to the right, the path climbs up a grassy ridge overlooking the motorway and continues along the path. You will arrive at a tarmac road.

(6) Turn right, cross the small hamlet and follow the stone path that descends to the left (no entry sign). Descend until you cross the hamlet of Genevray, continue to the left and then straight ahead (restaurant). You will reach the departmental road again.

(7) Cross the river, La Gresse. You are now in the commune of Le Gua. Go through the roundabout and take the second road on the right.

(8) At the Champrond sign, the road climbs and crosses part of the village. Turn right twice, leave the village and continue along the road. When you reach the hamlet of Champrond (housing estates), continue straight ahead. The road descends slightly to join another road that climbs up from the right.

(9) Turn left at the hiking sign for Vif, climb until you reach a path that is almost flat. Follow it for a little over 2 kilometres until you reach a good path that descends to the right.

(10) Follow this path down to Route des Celliers, turn left and follow this road to a footbridge that crosses the river. Continue straight ahead, pass between the buildings, and take Rue Champollion on the left.

(11) See the hieroglyphics on the wall, then turn right 100 metres further on.

(12) Follow Rue du Portail Rouge, continue to the school and turn right. At the traffic lights, cross the road and return to the starting point (S/E).

Notes

Water is available in the hamlets, the paths are good but sometimes muddy (especially in spring and autumn), so good footwear is essential.
The starting point can be reached from Grenoble by bus with TAG lines 25 or 26 (La Valonne stop).

Worth a visit

Note the two churches, Sainte-Marie-du-Genevray (12th century) and Saint-Jean-Baptiste in Vif (with ancient wall frescoes).
Residence of the Champollion family in the 18th and 19th centuries (hence the hieroglyphics on a wall indicating the presence of a property that belonged to this family); a museum is currently being built in this house and is due to open in summer 2020.
(5) Note that from this point onwards, you will be walking alongside a railway viaduct dating from 1877, on which runs the Alpes line from Grenoble to Veynes, then on to Gap and Briançon.

A lovely hike combining paths, trails and tarmac, pleasant because it is slightly shaded in places. Fairly easy.
The directions are very good, only the small path just after the railway viaduct was difficult to find.

The direction of the circular pattern is well chosen:
1 - The path from Genevray to Vif is gently sloping, which is good for finishing. Frequented by locals on Sundays.
2 - If you start in the morning, you can photograph the motorway and railway bridges with the sun on your left rather than in front of you.
A very varied walk.

For the start, we didn't set off from the private road, but took Rue du Bois du Gua for about thirty metres and then took the small path on the right that passes in front of a house, to avoid the steep, stony and unstable path. Otherwise, we have no complaints about this pleasant hike around Vif. Arriving at Saillants du Gua just after the bridge, we turned right to shorten the route a little, as night was beginning to fall. (Pleasant hike). 10.1 km in 3 hours 21 minutes, including a snack break.

My husband was doing the UT4M race, finishing in Vif, while I went on this hike.
The information sheet is very well done, which is fortunate because there are no (or very few) signposts and at some junctions there are lots of possibilities. Thank you for the description to find the barely visible path between the rubbish bins and the front of the house.
A pleasant hike on the outskirts of the city while still being in nature. However, the hum of the motorway reminds us that civilisation is not far away.
Nevertheless, it was great to have this walk suggested; otherwise, I would have been bored waiting for my husband to finish his race.
Just one small improvement: give more directions on the starting point of the hike or how to get there (I had to search a bit).

Justified comment, thank you for pointing it out. Indeed, I simply forgot to recalculate the elevation difference. Error corrected.

Hello,
I don't think the advertised elevation gain is accurate.
For my part, I had 390m
