Circuit around Chateau de Fenelon

Pretty route starting through mixed woodland with frequent good views, then climbing to a stunning viewpoint over the Dordogne valley. Mostly fairly gently undulating, with one short but steep descent, and then a steep climb just before the best viewpoint. Mainly on well-marked and defined woodland paths with some bits on very quiet country lanes.

Description of the walk

(S/E) Park either in front of the Chateau or just to the west. Walk to the Chateau gates, then take the path to the right alongside the boundary of the Chateau. This is a pretty path and good walking. After a slight rise and short descent, take the left fork and continue to follow the path. Keep right at the next fork. You will eventually come out of the woods and have open ground and a medium-sized hill on your left. Shortly after the woods on your right, you arrive at a path junction.

(1) Turn right and follow the level path across open ground and at the road turn right, then left after 50 metres. The path shortly bears round and uphill to the right. When you come to a road, turn left and continue along it for 200 metres.

(2) Turn right on a track with a signpost at the junction and a swimming pool on your left immediately after the turn. Follow the path through the woods gently uphill and then down to a road. Turn left on the road and in 40 metres turn left again onto another woodland track. This eventually becomes the driveway to a house, which you pass to the left and ends at a road.

(3) Turn right, pass a road to the left and continue to the crossroads where you turn left for 100 metres, then take another road which forks to the right. Take the next road on the right and descend steeply into the quiet village of Ste Mondane. Keep going past a turning into a car park on the right until you reach another road, next to the school building.

(4) Turn right and walk along the road for 60 metres, then enter a driveway on the left and immediately look for a less distinct path which forks uphill to the right. In 20 metres you will see a pair of kissing gates - go through and the path becomes more distinct. Walk up the steep hill with views on the left and eventually a wall on the right, where the path becomes a bit less steep. Carry on with houses on your right and steep slopes away to your left until the path turns 90 degrees to the right and becomes a small driveway.

(5) At the corner, if you look to your left, you will see an information table for the viewpoint and there is a stunning view to the north and east. Retrace your steps back to the corner and follow the driveway to join a road. Turn left and follow the road to your start point. (S/E)

A lovely little walk, especially if you combine it with a visit to the castle, which is well worth the admission price. Allow an hour and a half at most for the visit, taking your time and reading all the information boards. There are picnic tables near the castle and along the path
