Description of the walk

Start from the village square in Rouffilhac.

(S/E) Walk past the old school towards Les Barthes and Les Granges. After 100 m, at the bend, take the path on the right. Follow this until you reach a road (make sure you close the gate properly).

(1) Cross the road, open and close the two successive electric gates. Head down into the woods opposite and follow the edge of the meadow to the wash house, then climb up the opposite slope to the D128.

(2) Follow the D128 to the left towards Nozac.

(3) In the village of Nozac (castle, church), turn right directly opposite the war memorial. Go round the house with the steps on the right. Then continue along the small path.

(4) At the road in the hamlet of Le Couderc, turn left and, at the next four-way junction, turn right.

(5) At the crossroads, take the path on the left (yellow markings).

(6) At the road, continue left, then a few metres further on, turn right at the corner of a house (yellow markings). Take the path that goes downhill, passes under a power line and then climbs steeply.

(7) Take the road to the right; at the hamlet of Le Bas, leave the markings and continue straight ahead towards Le Vigan. At the right-hand bend, turn left onto the ascending path. Pass between two fields then enter the woodland. Just before the road, take the path to the right at a 45° angle and, at the corner of the field, turn left onto the path and join a road.

(8) Continue to the right and, at the hamlet of Mourlhou, at the first house, follow the path to the right. At the road, turn left and further on, stay in the valley on the right.

(9) After the ponds and before the high-voltage power line, take the path on the left that climbs up the limestone slope.

(10) At the road, turn left. At the next crossroads (waymark), veer right then left at the next one (another waymark).

(11) On the road going downhill, just before leaving the woods, take the path on the right marked in yellow. When you reach the village of Rouffilhac, turn right to reach the car park (S/E).

These walks are easy to manage, even with two 9-year-olds. The elevation gain is manageable, even for those who aren’t particularly fit.

A pleasant, easy walk. There are no fences at the start of the route; they are probably only put up when the sheep are in the fields in spring

The signposting isn’t inconsistent; it’s simply a walk I’ve devised myself, which sometimes follows a signposted route and sometimes takes unmarked paths. So it’s quite normal to occasionally take a path marked with a cross... You have to know how to think outside the box! As for what makes the walk interesting, there are lovely little pastoral paths, a wash house nestled in lush greenery, a castle for those who know how to look... And so on, and so on. I’m sorry you were disappointed.

14 January 2022: fine, sunny but cold weather (5°C). Relatively few
shade: ideal in winter for soaking up the sun. Signposting often inconsistent (we followed paths marked with an X).
Lovely views in October/November.
The rest is relatively uninteresting.
In summary: disappointing.

A very pleasant walk, with beautiful buildings, sweeping views and, in Nozac, as mentioned, a castle and a church.
Also worth a visit is the imposing church in Rouffilhac. At point 5, please note that this is a crossroads; you must take the path on the left that forms part of the crossroads. In the undergrowth at point 7, there are a few fallen trees that can sometimes make it difficult to follow the path. Highly recommended, a very varied route.

A magnificent hike, at times very wild. From the start and along the way, do not follow the yellow markings, but rely instead on the spot-on guide from our friend Chamarluke, whom I would like to thank. Total elevation gain: 482m.
