Cime du Sabion

Cime du Sabion is a Franco-Italian peak rising to 2,610 m. From the summit, with one foot in France and one in Italy, you can admire Mont Bégo and the main peaks of the Valmasque valley to the south-west. To the north, you’ll have a bird’s-eye view of the Entracque valley. To the east, you’ll be impressed by the vast, rugged cirque carved out at the foot of the peaks of Sabion, Peïrefique and the Roche de l’Abysse.

Description of the walk

From Saint-Dalmas de Tende, take the D91 towards Castérino. In the village, continue to the upper car park, then follow the track to Baisse de Peïrefique. (Low-clearance vehicles not recommended).
A few metres from the car park, head back to Marker 371, the starting point of the route.

(S/E) From marker 371, follow the small path climbing to the left of the track (signpost Col du Sabion/Roche de l'Abysse). Continue to a small pass, marker 372.

(1) At the small pass on the left, facing west, follow the path that passes beneath the Barchenzane ridge. You will reach a small lake on the right, just at Marker 373.

(2) At the marker, the path splits into two; take the one on the right, marked by very sparse stone markers. Keep to the right and head north to a fork situated right on the French-Italian border.

(3) Take the path on the right, which winds its way up the slope of the Sabion peak.

(4) Turn left and follow the ridge to the summit of Sabion.

(5) Enjoy the panoramic view from the summit. Return to the fork in the path leading to the summit.

(4) Continue along the ridge, which descends towards a small pass, then climbs slightly again to the summit of Cime de Barchenzane.

(6) Staying on the ridge, begin a gentle descent and reach marker 378, the junction with the path coming from the Roche de l'Abysse.

(7) Take the Via Alpina and, via a series of wide bends, return to marker 377.

(8) Take the path on the right, which clearly leads to the small pass and marker 372, both clearly visible.

(1) Return to the car park via the same route as on the way out (S/E)

We set off from the upper car park at Casterino (marker 394) to marker 393, then took a steep climb up to the pass (marker 375).
Instead of climbing to the summit of Sabion, we opted to descend to LAGO DE LA VACCA. A superb spot for a picnic, with a beautiful view of the chamois. Round trip hike: 16 km and 1,000 m elevation gain. The option of taking the path from the Baisse de Peyrefique must be nice too, as it’s a scenic route along a good path. To reach the Baisse de Peyrefique, a 4x4 is essential.
