Lac Vert de Fontanalba and Voie Sacrée

This hike takes place in a very green valley, punctuated by a pretty little lake that takes on the colour of its surroundings. You can admire the pictograms of the Sacred Way (like those in the Vallée des Merveilles). The whole area is dominated by Mont Bégo.

Description of the walk

Access: Take the Roya Valley towards Tende.
At Saint-Dalmas de Tende, turn left towards the hamlet of Casterino and the Vallée des Merveilles.
In Casterino, cross the hamlet to take a small narrow road and arrive at marker 394, the starting point of the hike, just after a small farm on the right. Park in the small car park.

(S) Start at marker 394. Go to marker 395 and take the track that climbs gently to the right (be careful, it is used by 4x4s).

(1) At marker 392, there is a junction leading to Lac des Grenouilles. Continue straight ahead along the track, which levels out and even descends slightly, to reach marker 390.

(2) Leave the track and take the small path that climbs to the right, entering the Mercantour Park. Join the track and continue for about 80 metres.

(3) Find a small path on the right (shortcut to Lac Vert). This is essential these days due to a landslide on the path leading to the Fontanalba Refuge. The path is well marked with cairns. It descends slightly, crosses a small stream and arrives at some ruins.

(4) From there, the path climbs more steeply in a series of switchbacks to rejoin the trail.

(5) You will enter a protected area (stay on the path, do not use walking sticks). Climb up to the right towards the Sacred Way.

(6) Turn left onto the Discovery Trail to admire three new engravings, then turn back to return to the crossroads. At the crossroads, turn left towards the Sacred Way.

(7) There is a fork in the path to the Twin Lakes on the left; continue straight ahead to reach the Sacred Way. After crossing this path and admiring the engravings, which date back more than 5,000 years, you will reach the highest point of the hike with an orientation table, then a crossroads.

(8) On the right are the Twin Lakes and on the left is a small path that leads back to the start of the Sacred Path. Continue straight ahead along the two lakes to reach a large depression (the peat bogs). Follow the path that runs alongside this bog. On your right, a small stream accompanies you with its gentle murmur and refreshing water, leading to a crossroads where you can see more engravings by turning left.

(9) At the crossroads, continue straight ahead to reach the beautiful Lac Vert. Follow the path, leaving the lake on your right, and you will arrive back on the track at marker 388.

(10) Go back up the trail on the left to reach the junction you passed on the way there. Continue straight ahead and join the fork towards the Découverte trail.

(5) Descend to the right via the path you took on the way there.

(1) At marker 392, if you feel like visiting Lake Grenouilles, turn left and follow the path that climbs slightly. Before reaching the lake, as you cross a grassy plain, you are sure to spot a marmot, as there are many of them in this area. Retrace your steps back to marker 392.

(1) Turn left to return to the starting point (S/E)

Unfortunately, there is no water left in the once magnificent green lake... But the hike is still beautiful. Stunning landscapes and rock carvings galore. We saw very few wild animals, apart from a few marmots. The route is very busy, with 4x4s on the first part of the hike and lots of hikers (perhaps the reason for the lack of wildlife). It's still a nice hike, suitable for families.

A superb hike. We set off from Casterino and returned via the Bicknell trail. I highly recommend it.

to be done as desired from Casterino or the entrance to the PNM, or as a circular route and return by road to Casterino

easy hike – accessible – well-maintained trail and abundant alpine flowers – the trail was not very busy in early June 2023, but there were thunderstorms, as well as ibex and chamois... Worth doing again in sunny weather, but perhaps avoid weekends in summer.

Superb hike, thank you to the author for this route.
We did the hike on the weekend of 15 August, so there were quite a few people around the various lakes.

A very beautiful walk, but it's starting to get cold up there. The green lake and the twin lakes were partially frozen. In some places, there was sleet on the ground that lasted all day despite the good weather.
In short, bring warm clothes!
It took us 6 hours and 45 minutes, including breaks for lunch, snacks and photos.

A steep climb up a sort of paved path, either via the tree-top adventure course or the car park next to the farm above Casterino.
An interesting guided tour of the petroglyphs, where we saw lots of chamois and marmots.
Be aware that the first lake is just a pond; the lake is a little further on and there isn't much water, but it's still beautiful.
Chamois can be seen above the twin lakes. The frog lake is also nice.

Magnificent valley. Fairly easy hike despite a 700-metre elevation gain.
Wonderful encounters: marmots and ibex.
Picnic by the Twin Lakes.
A little disappointed by Lac Vert: practically dry.
Detour to the pretty Lac des Grenouilles.
Excellent signposting.

A magnificent hike. I hadn't been back since my teenage years, but it's still just as beautiful.

Be careful, today, 29/05/19, there is still quite a lot of snow once you pass the Fontanalbe refuge. Snowshoes are highly recommended. Nothing dangerous, but personally I came back with wet feet (but happy )

We have grouped this hike with the previous one (Lac des Grenouilles)
The same comment applies regarding parking, which, in my opinion, is better done in the village rather than at the end of the narrow road (difficult to pass other vehicles, and lots of hikers in the morning), which we had to walk along anyway (to fetch our car!!!)
