Description of the walk

Park in the car park in the village of Moulinet.

(S/E) Take the road towards Sospel. Cross the bridge and, after 500 m, reach marker 20.

(1) Turn left onto the path running parallel to the road towards La Baisse de Linière. You will soon reach a concrete path; follow it downhill to the Chapel of Saint-Sébastien.

(2) Turn left almost 180° to begin an ascent, following the yellow markings. At the Roman bridge, turn left until you reach the junction marked by marker 21.

(3) Stay on the left-hand path towards L'Avenquet. Continue the climb until you reach a stream.

(4) Cross it via the bridge and, immediately afterwards, take the path on the right. Follow a steep, winding climb to reach the ruins of L’Avenquet.

(5) Continue along a flatter section, still marked in yellow, until you reach another stream.

(6) Cross it and head uphill along the path on the right. You’ll reach a fairly dense forest, then come to marker 24.

(7) Take the path on the left, marked in yellow, continuing gently uphill. Carry on to reach the Baisse de Linière, marker 22. Here, join theGR®52.

(8) Pass theGR®52ahead and veer slightly to the right to reach the summit of the Cime de Linière, where there is also a shepherd’s hut made of breeze blocks and sheet metal.

(9) Retrace your steps down the path you came up to return to the junction at marker 24.

(7) Continue straight ahead and head towards Moulinet. The path is opposite the signpost (do not follow the arrow pointing to a dead-end path). You will reach the forest, where the descent follows a winding path. At the bottom of the descent, you will find the junction marked by signpost 21.

(3) Turn left and, retracing your steps from the outward journey, return to the Moulinet car park (S/E).

A lovely walk, well signposted and, above all, well shaded. Superb views of the Menour Chapel.

Views of the peaks on the Italian border and the Bévéra Gorges. A beautiful panorama from the summit of La Linière.
A refreshing break by the banks of the Bévéra before the final climb to Moulinet. A visit to the village is interesting, peaceful and relaxing; perhaps it’s naptime, with the shutters drawn and no one in the narrow streets.

It’s a lovely walk, 80% of which takes place in the forest, which is particularly pleasant in summer. The path is well signposted and easy to follow. From the summit of Linière, there’s a beautiful view of the various mountains that form the border with Italy. A visit to the village of Le Moulinet is highly recommended.

We really enjoyed this walk, which follows good paths throughout and is often shaded. Taking the route past the ruins of L'Avenquet adds a little to the distance but allows you to explore these old terraces, now overgrown by the forest, with their simple ruins of barns and sheepfolds – a deeply moving sight that really gives you a sense of life in days gone by. From the ruins (point 5) to marker 24 (point 7), the path is practically flat, so you make good progress in this section, which is a welcome rest. The views of the Bévéra Gorges from there are magnificent.
