Description of the walk

(S) Set off from Base Camp heading north-north-west along the stony path. To do this, follow the sharedGRP® routes of the Tour du Pays de Chambeyron and the Fortified Frontier. After a good kilometre, reach the path to the Stroppia Waterfall on the left.

(1) Turn left (west) towards the crossing of the stream flowing down from Stroppia. After a winding climb with a rapid gain in altitude, take the path carved into the rock. This section is narrow and exposed. The gradient is steep and the 600-metre climb is over a short distance. You will reach Lac Neira (often dry) above the waterfall.

(2) Continue along theGRP® path westwards and then north-westwards. You will reach another GRP® junction.

(3) Take the path on the right, known as the Petit Tour du Chambeyron. Stay on this path.

(4) At a fork, continue due north, leaving the path to the Barenghi Bivouac on your right. Climb the Col de la Gypière. The entire ascent takes place beneath the peaks of the Brec de Chambeyron on the left.

(5) Head west then north down a winding path to reach Lac des Neuf Couleurs.

(6) Continue heading due west to reach Lac Long and follow the lake on your left.

(7) Complete the descent westwards to reach the Refuge du Chambeyron (E).

We completed this route from Chambeyron to Chiappera. There was still snow above 2,400 m, but on gentle slopes. There was a lot of water in the Stroppia waterfall; the section over the footbridge was impressive, with plenty of spray creating a strong wind. There was no barrier, as the ground was quite slippery and the drop was unprotected. The section along the cliff face was somewhat flooded in places; there was no handrail (present at the top but useless) on the most exposed sections, although a short section recently rebuilt with steps is equipped. This should be put into perspective as the path is quite wide, which provides protection from the drop. In any case, a magnificent and very varied route (from winter to summer in two hours).

A stunning route with magnificent scenery, especially on reaching the Col de la Gypiere; the climb to the summit of La Frema is well worth the detour, offering breathtaking views of the Italian mountains!

A brilliant hike!
The climb up to Stroppia Waterfall is truly magnificent!
We did this hike in July 2019 with three children aged 8, 9 and 12.
The 1,300m elevation gain is significant, but the climb up to Lake Niera is very pleasant, albeit steep.
The rest of the hike is varied.
A stop at the Barenghi bivouac (which is very well maintained) gives you a chance to prepare for the climb up the Col de la Gypière...
The arrival at the Chambeyron refuge is always a pleasure, after passing a succession of lakes... Neuf Couleurs, Noir, Long, Premier...
Thanks for the guide!
