Chemin Charles Péguy: Saint-Cyr-sous-Dourdan - Ablis

This route is the second of four sections of the Charles Péguy Trail: Lozère (Palaiseau) - Chartres via Dourdan. It follows in the footsteps of the poet Charles Péguy, who celebrated his two pilgrimages (made in 1912 and 1913, each lasting four days there and back) in a poem that remains famous to this day. This is the transition stage: from the valleys and rolling hills of Hurepoix to the Beauce plateau.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Chemin Charles Péguy: overview

Description of the walk

Departure: 39 rue de l'Église in Saint-Cyr-sous-Dourdan.

The route is marked with blue and white markers.

(S). Take the path south (wash house on your right) to cross the two branches of the Rémarde.

(1) At Pont de Rué, take the D27 to the left for 100 metres, then turn right onto a path at the corner of a house. This path leads to Dourdan, following theGR®111(red and white markings).

(2) At the intersection, with a footbridge without a railing on the right, turn left and walk along a large field. Enter the forest, ignoring a perpendicular path.

(3) At a fork, turn right to stay on the edge of the forest.

(4) Walk past the Vaubesnard farm and rejoin a tarmac road. Follow this road, which turns right and joins the D838 road.

(5) Cross the road carefully and continue on the GR®.

(6) At the entrance to Bois des Brosses, turn left to descend towards Dourdan. Go straight down to Rue Pierre Semard, which you should follow for a few metres to the right, then take the passageway to cross the railway tracks. Turn left and then immediately right into Avenue Amédée Guénée. Then turn left into Rue du Faubourg de Chartres.

(7) Reach the imposing medieval castle and walk around it, passing in front of the market square with its superb covered market. Take Rue Haute Foulerie, then Rue Basse Foulerie, before joining Rue du Moulin du Roi (on the right). Walk back and forth (200 metres in total) along Rue du Puits des Champs to see Maison Yvon (plaque), where Péguy stayed.

(8) Return to the previous crossroads and turn left onto Rue du Moulin du Roi, which leads to L'Orge.

(9) Follow the road for 500 metres until you reach the D386.

(10) Take this road on the right towards the "ring road" for about 80 metres.

(11) Cross and turn left in front of the hospital.

The picturesque road leads to the departmental road at the entrance to Sainte-Mesme after 3.5 km (view of a beautiful manor house on the right).

(12) Turn left onto this road and leave it at the bend to pass under the railway bridge.

(13) Take the path on the right 100 metres further up. Follow the course of the Orge river at a distance, with bends. Go around a pond and come out onto a road at a place called Le Gué de l'Orge.

(14) Take the small road on the left, then continue along a path that climbs gently through the woods and then along the edge of meadows. Descend slightly, cross the river and come out onto the main street of Saint-Martin-de-Bréthencourt. Follow this street (D116) to the left for about 300 metres.

::15 After the railway bridge, don't miss the Chemin des Sources de l'Orge on the right. 250 metres after the cemetery, the path bends to the right.

(16) Take the path on the left, which crosses a stream 50 metres further on. Go up opposite to reach the top of Bréthencourt via Impasse de Marly. Turn left and go around the wash house on the right.

Take Rue de la Croix de Pierre on the right until you cross the motorway and then the railway line.

(17) After 50 metres, turn right onto a path and follow it until it joins a road. Turn right to join the D168.

(18) Follow this road to the right for 300 metres. At elevation 155, turn left towards Long Orme. The landscape is very typical of the Beauce region, with a view of Ablis church on your left. Cross the hamlet (arrow on the right) or ignore it on the left (no arrow) and continue along the small road, ignoring the road coming from the right, towards Guéherville.

In Guéherville, turn left to rejoin the Chartres-Massy railway line that we left before Limours.

(19) Follow this track on the left for about 3km to reach Ablis.

Enter Ablis via Rue des Loges, then turn left onto Rue du Vieux Chemin de Paris. Turn right onto Rue Pierre Trouvé, then left onto Rue du Heaume to reach Ablis Church. On the east exterior wall of the building is a plaque in memory of Péguy (E).

This is the end point of the section.

Notes

For everything related to accommodation and route strategies, see: In the footsteps of Péguy towards Chartres. Levimpont, St Cyr-sous-Dourdan, Rouillon, several lodges and hotels in Dourdan.

Provisions can be purchased in Dourdan, Sainte-Mesme, Saint-Martin de Brethencourt and Ablis.

Dourdan is accessible by train from Paris Austerlitz station (RER C) and from Tours via Vendôme. If you have already completed the first stage, you can join the route from the Dourdan-La-Foret stop.

Take the telephone numbers of taxis in the towns you pass through with you.

Worth a visit

Dourdan and Sainte-Mesme are mentioned in Péguy's text.

The forests upstream and downstream from Dourdan are dense and have a rugged terrain.
In Dourdan: castle, market hall, ramparts. A very beautiful town, also a crossroads for hiking trails.
Famous and superb forest.

Sainte-Mesme, the last village in Essonne, precedes Saint-Martin-de-Bréthencourt, in Yvelines, the beginning of Beauce.

Beautiful church in Ablis. Ablis is on the border between two regions: to the south – where we arrive – it is typically Beauce; to the north – see the third section of the Chemin – it returns to a hilly and green landscape.

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

Second stage of this Lozère-Chartres journey.
A little tough physically (I'm paying for yesterday's stage) at the end, but otherwise a very accessible hike. No major difficulties.
Very quiet trail, just a few hikers in Saint-Martin. The villages we passed through (except for Dourdan on market day) were deserted.
As the description says, this is really a transitional stage. You can clearly see the beginning of the Beauce region after Saint-Martin, which I find quite striking. All the more so at this time of year (early May) with the magnificent rapeseed flowers in bloom, which will accompany me all the way to Chartres.
There are some very beautiful sections in the forest, especially the one before Saint-Martin, which surprised me with its calm and beautiful trees. There are also some beautiful buildings, and the arrival in the aforementioned village is charming. The arrival in the Beauce fields is really nice, despite the noise from the motorway/high-speed train. France has changed a lot since Péguy! Dourdan is perhaps the most beautiful town on the route, in my opinion. The last section (the long straight road, formerly a railway line) to Ablis is quite amusing because it is very rural, whereas I thought it would be a straight line between two fields.

As for the signposts, I have no complaints, I didn't get lost. I used the map and Visorando directions less than the day before. The signposts do the job well. It's not always easy to find them in some villages (Dourdan, Ablis), but the Visorando directions take over, so it's not a problem.
My only comment is that the entrance to the path at point 19 towards Ablis is quite overgrown, so be careful not to miss it!

Thank you for this beautiful hike.

My favourite part of the route! Beautiful forest paths towards Dourdan and along the Orge river. Even the straight stretch towards Ablis, which is shaded, is very pleasant. Between points 11 and 12, just before passing under the railway line, there is a pond with picnic tables on the left. There is also a water point in St Martin de Brethencourt at the corner with the street that goes up to the church. At point 19, the path is not easy to find but it is well marked with crosses all around so you can get there. Thank you for this beautiful route!

Sorry, I didn't explain myself very well about the water source.
It is actually a fountain between points 14 and 15 (just before crossing the railway line), where you can refill your water bottle. On very sunny days, it is very pleasant to be able to quench your thirst and cool off there. I appreciated it.
Thank you for requesting that the tunnel be cleared.

Yes, indeed, the clearing of the road tunnel is unpredictable: we got it done just before our group hike in early July, but it is not satisfactory in the long term.
I will pass on your comment to the relevant local council (Prunay en Yvelines).

Thank you for the comment about the "water point" between 15 and 16.

Kind regards
FH

The description and map provided by the website are more than sufficient for this hike.
The start of the hike is very pleasant, particularly the crossing of Dourdan.
You will enjoy the wooded area around Dourdan to Saint Martin de Bréthencourt.
The rest of the hike is very exposed to the sun. There is a water source between points 14 and 15 on the D116.
Be careful at point 19 as the entrance to the old railway line is overgrown with brush.

Hello,

It's good to persevere towards the source of the hike. In July, I did the whole thing in three days. The heat is not very pleasant in the afternoon in Beauce. But in Hurepoix (from Lozère to St Cyr sous Dourdan), the foliage makes the route very pleasant.
Keep going!

Thank you!
You've chosen a beautiful season.
I see you've also done the last section of the Chemin Péguy, well done!
Continue towards the source; from Lozère/Palaiseau you will see a varied landscape, very different.

Best regards

François André

The trail winds its way through landscapes offering beautiful views, all the way to the historic town of Dourdan. After admiring its Philippian castle, market hall and church, a stop at the Maison Yvon is a must. Then comes the crossing of the forest, leading to the wild and mysterious Val d'Orge, which we follow upstream to its source. On leaving Bréthencourt, the kingdom of cereals truly begins. Rapeseed and wheat occupy the land and remarkable Beauceron farms come into view. Blond, straw yellow and green blend with the blue and white of the sky, all the way to the bell tower of Ablis, a permanent landmark on the horizon.

Note: route taken on the afternoon of 15 July and the morning of 16 July 2016.

A lot of rain for June, the eve of summer!
The path is beautiful, first through a forest area and then the magnificent Beauce region.
There are also lots of animals along the way, including weasels, hares, etc.
The sources of the Orge are magnificent.

We did this hike in reverse, starting from Long Orme, as we live in Dourdan and were able to read the signposts without too much difficulty.
For your information, we did the Machery-Dourdan route on 21 July, covering 13.5 km in 3 hours. Our impressions were the same.
We are planning to do the next section between Long Orme and Chartres, probably in two stages.
We are three retired hikers, two women and myself, who enjoy this activity and do it regularly.
