(S) The route starts from Ceillac towards the D60. This hike follows theGR®5markings, which are (very precise) red and white. Head towards Lac Sainte-Anne. Follow the road for a short while, then climb a path on the right and continue along a ski trail.
(1) Near the Camping des Mélèzes, turn right onto the scree slope and head towards the hamlet of Bas Mélezet.
(2) Take the path that climbs to the right of the Cascade de la Pisse, then head into the woods.
Cross a footbridge and follow the stream as you climb. You’ll reach Lac Miroir (or Lac des Prés Soubeyrand) at 2,287m.
(3) Take a moment to admire the lake, which truly lives up to its name, ‘Mirror’. Continue along theGR®5, passing close to the Preynasses sheepfolds. Reach the chapel and Lac Sainte Anne with its turquoise waters.
(4) Climb south-eastwards up grassy slopes and then over scree. The path is well marked. Ascend towards the Col Girardin at 2,700m.
(5) This pass marks the boundary between the Hautes-Alpes and Alpes-de-Haute-Provence departments. From the pass, there is a view of the Pelvoux Massif and the remote, wild valley that is our destination.
Descend south-eastwards, first via switchbacks and then
(6) following the Torrent des Séchoirs.
(7) At around 2,368m, follow the signposts for the hamlet of Maljasset. The descent takes you over rather schistose terrain. Maljasset (E) is a hamlet surrounded by magnificent peaks.
