Castries walks

The first third of the hike will take you to the castle, its large park and a small part of the old village. The rest of the hike will take you through various forests, a mixture of heath, pine forests, olive groves, etc. Along the way, you will cross the famous aqueduct several times, as well as some lesser-known places such as La Capelette and the old quarries.

This hike takes you on a grand tour of the Bannières plain. The old Pont des Tourilles bridge, the Source du Boulidou spring, the ruins of the Templar farm and, above all, varied forests and flora will be along the way. This route deliberately takes small, unmarked and little-used paths. Therefore, although the description may be sufficient, it is advisable to use the GPS function of the Visorando app to monitor your progress during the hike.

This peaceful walk partly follows the Castries Aqueduct, built by Paul Riquet (architect of the Canal du Midi) and completed in 1676. This structure supplied water to the Château de Castries via 7 km of tunnels, trenches and aqueducts. This hike also allows you to discover the ruins of the Pont des Tourilles bridge over the Cadoule, a remarkable little chapel, the Fondespierre departmental estate and a small drystone shelter nestled in a dry stone wall.

A walk through the wild countryside around Castries, not far from Montpellier. You will discover quarries and some particularly interesting sculptures. You will walk through the undergrowth. An amazing route with many surprises in store.

A visit to the Grand Devès site from Guzargues. This hike will take you around Serre Rond, a hill combining heath and history, which was home to a German observation post from 1942 to 1944, the remains of which can still be seen today. Along the way, you will find the grave of the tracking dog Youki. You will then continue on your way towards Montaud and the source of the Cadoule before returning to your starting point.

Please note: access to the marshes is closed from 1 April to 30 June so that the birds can lay and hatch their eggs in peace.

A pleasant, easy hike. Mostly on paths, sometimes on small roads. Landscapes of garrigue, vines and woods. Several mills line the route. You must make a short round trip to the Vidourle to admire them and enjoy the river's restful calm (on this day!!).

Pic-Saint-Loup, the legendary peak in the Montpellier hinterland. Here, I suggest approaching it from the east via Saint-Mathieu-de-Tréviers. This shaded, less frequented route through the woods takes you past the ruined castle of Montferrand. At the summit, you can enjoy views of the Alps, the Pyrenees, Mont Ventoux, the Cévennes and the Mediterranean.

Pic Saint-Loup is a classic spot with a superb panorama: on one side, the view stretches as far as Mont Aigoual, which rises above the Cévennes, and on the other, the plain stretches to the blue Mediterranean. Starting from Saint-Mathieu-de-Tréviers, this route begins in the opposite direction, allowing you to enjoy more peace and quiet and follow the sun's path. Some sections are vertiginous, see reviews

A very pleasant hike in the Bois de Paris through heath and holm oak trees to beautiful viewpoints over the Cévennes.

In the heathland hinterland between Sommières and Quissac, this wild, wooded hill dominates the Vidourle valley and offers a beautiful view to the south, all the way to the sea.

From Les Matelles, a pretty medieval village, this circuit provides access to the path on the crest of a ridge. The Tour de Vias (watchtower) was once built on this promontory. It offers beautiful views of Pic Saint-Loup, the village and the former convent of Notre-Dame-des-Champs before descending towards the Romanesque bridge of Deux Serres, which crosses the Lirou. Afterwards, the trail faces Notre-Dame-des-Champs and returns to the village, winding through a forest of pine, juniper and holm oak trees. This hike may be closed depending on the fire risk. A tour to discover the rich history of the Vidourle Valley: castles, old farmhouses, fountains and wash houses. A few sections on paved roads make this walk accessible to all.

This is a pleasant and easy hike, with no elevation gain, shaded and sheltered from the wind, with many points of interest: flowers in spring, quarries, mills, drystone shelters, as well as donkeys, horses and chickens. Follow the yellow markings, which makes this walk possible even without a GPS, and if you have the map, there are several shortcuts you can take if the children get tired. There are several good spots for a picnic.

This short hike, located between the villages of Fontanès and Vacquières, crosses the famous vineyards of Pic Saint-Loup and forests of pine and holm oak, leading you to a superb chapel listed as a historic monument and the 11th-century Pont des Cammaous bridge.

This hike takes place partly along the water's edge and partly on trails near wooded areas. It allows you to discover the habitats of the Mediterranean coast. The northern part is a lovely place to watch the sunrise or sunset. The Bois du Boucanet is owned by the Conservatoire du Littoral. It is important to follow the marked trails (yellow markings) in this area so as not to impact the natural habitats and flora of these environments.

A beautiful hike with views from above, running along the ridges of the causse that overlooks Valflaunès and Lauret. There are beautiful views to the east and south throughout the circuit over the villages of the wine-growing plain and the Pic Saint Loup vineyards. In the distance, the hills fade into a beautiful shade of blue.

After the magical shores of the Arnel and Vic ponds, explore the old salt marshes belonging to the Conservatoire du Littoral and discover an environment of great ecological richness. Don't miss the nature reserve with its flamingos and the wine estate.
