Castries - aqueduct 1

This peaceful walk partly follows the Castries Aqueduct, built by Paul Riquet (architect of the Canal du Midi) and completed in 1676. This structure supplied water to the Château de Castries via 7 km of tunnels, trenches and aqueducts.
This hike also allows you to discover the ruins of the Pont des Tourilles bridge over the Cadoule, a remarkable little chapel, the Fondespierre departmental estate and a small drystone shelter nestled in a dry stone wall.

Description of the walk

Coming from Castries, the car park is located on the right of the D26 at the end of a 2 km straight road, just before the bridge.
(S/E) Take the path eastwards and follow thePR® signs for 1.25 km.

(1) Leave the road and take the path on the right that leads into the heath between pine and holm oak trees. After 350m, the path opens onto an area with more sparse vegetation. Here, turn left onto the stony path that climbs for about 20 metres and follow it for 100m to discover a very pretty little chapel called La Capelette

(2). Follow the path north for 130 metres until you reach a large, open crossroads and turn right onto the wide path that curves around in a large arc to the foot of the aqueduct arches.

(3) To admire this structure, you can walk underneath it, along it and then back again for a total of 200 metres.

(3) On the way back, take the path that branches off from the aqueduct towards the north-east until you reach a T-junction. Turn right and after 100 metres, turn left (onto thePR®) towards the Domaine Départemental de Fondespierre, following a sports field.

(4) You can access the inner courtyard of the estate. Then, following thePR®, go around the buildings on the right. The path heads north-west between a long cultivated field and an olive grove. At the end of the grove, follow the path on the left until you reach the crossroads.

(5) Head south on the track lined with old plane trees. At the foot of the hill, keep right on the path that climbs up the hill and then descends on the south side to cross the aqueduct in a trench covered with slabs.

(6) Here, you have two options: follow the aqueduct to the right or continue for 20 metres and, at the crossroads, take the path on the right which will join the aqueduct after 600 metres. Take the aqueduct on the left where it disappears (tunnel entrance). Marked on the map.

(7) From there, descend to the path located about 20 metres below and follow it to the right, heading due west. It winds through the heath, passes a small drystone shelter and joins the D26 just after the right-angle bend.
Cross it and follow the path to the Romanesque bridge of Les Tourilles, where you can cross the Cadoule river on stepping stones.

(8) Return to the road and take the path below the D26, which leads back to the car park (S/E).

A short, easy walk suitable for everyone, perfect for a family outing, for example. The paths are well-maintained, the area isn’t very busy, and it’s peaceful. I highly recommend this easy walk (no steep hills).

My walking friends didn't want to do the whole loop, so we stayed around this beautiful aqueduct, a lovely walk of about 7 km in beautiful natural surroundings. Thank you, and best regards,
Yves Leray

A very pleasant afternoon walk, during which you can admire the aqueduct, the Capelette chapel, a drystone shelter and the Tourilles bridge, which unfortunately had no water flowing underneath it when we visited.
With the Visorando GPS, it's easy to follow this route.

A beautiful hike starting at the aqueduct, then the aqueduct slabs, the Capelette chapel, a shaded path through the heath, near Montpellier, water... and pine mushrooms...
The route is well signposted despite numerous paths criss-crossing the area. However, the route near the Tourilles bridge is a little difficult to find. No difficulty, recommended for anyone interested in architectural discoveries.

Hi, we gave the description an average rating because we don't use GPS, only your explanations and the map. I admit that it's difficult for the author to give a precise description of this route given the many trails and paths that mark it. So we did our own thing between points 3 and 6, hence our completely subjective rating. That's what makes the hike interesting, thank you for introducing us to the aqueduct.

The walk is pleasant, especially in good weather. However, the route and description are not very clear. We couldn't find the path on the right to the little chapel. A walker gave us directions. Similarly, at stage 7, after the drystone shelter, you say "just after the road at right angles", but there are several paths that look like right angles.
Please keep suggesting beautiful walks. Thank you for your work

A very pleasant walk, quite busy, especially near the large arches of the aqueduct, on a windy and cloudy day.

We set off from the Fonds des Pierres estate (marked 4 on the map), where the signposting was perfect until Capelette and beyond.
But at the entrance to the village of Castries, we lost the markings, so we crossed the RD 26 and followed the aqueduct to the centre of the village, then towards the castle, where we found yellow markings that took us back to our campsite. We were disappointed not to have seen the Tourilles bridge or the emperor's thing (8 and 7) and not to have completed the loop we wanted to do, probably because we started at a different point to the Visorando guide. But our route was still worth the detour.

A short, easy and very pleasant walk, with beautiful scenery and stunning views.
The route is a little tricky to follow due to the large number of paths and trails.
We had to use GPS to find the trail at point 1.

Unless you carry a phone with you to enter the GPS coordinates of each waypoint, the route of this hike is very difficult to follow.
There are lots of paths leading off in all directions and they all look the same, with too few signs using landmarks to indicate changes in direction and points of interest.
It's a shame because the setting is superb...
So we navigated our own way along the main GR trail, with a quick glimpse of the capelette and a break at the foot of the aqueduct before returning by the same path.
Disappointed...
