Fossá Waterfall

Located on the road to Tjørnuvík, Fossá Waterfall is the highest waterfall in the Faroe Islands, with a 140-metre drop in two sections. Many visitors stop to take photos from the roadside or at the foot of the second waterfall.

This short hike will take you up to the first waterfall, the larger of the two.

The spectacle is particularly impressive after a few days of rain.

Description of the walk

Coming from Route 10 (the main road through the archipelago), park on the left-hand side of the road shortly after crossing the river.

(S/E) From the side of the road on the left bank of the river, take the path that climbs to the foot of the second waterfall (the lowest one).
You will reach a small wooden platform.

(1) Retrace your steps and look for a trail on the left that climbs towards an electricity pole.
Follow this well-marked path overlooking the road heading north. After a slight bend to the left, you will arrive at the foot of a corridor where a little water may flow in wet weather.

(2) Carefully climb up this corridor for a few dozen metres. Some passages on the rocks may be slippery or require the use of your hands to climb large steps.
Quickly turn left onto a flat area overlooking the first part of the hike and return towards the waterfall. After a few minutes on this path, surrounded by sheep tracks, you will reach the top of the lower waterfall.

You can climb to the foot of the second waterfall by following the left bank of the river or by taking a path a few metres higher up.

(3) Then retrace your steps along the same route.

(2) Take care on the descent down the small gully and follow the path you took on the way up to return to the starting point (S/E).

Notes

A short hike, but not without its difficulties.

In wet weather, you will be walking in mud and on stones that may be slippery.
The passage through the corridor from (2) is short but has large steps, slippery sections and sometimes water when it rains.
Wear suitable footwear (high-top, waterproof boots) and consider bringing walking sticks.

The waterfalls are particularly beautiful when it has rained a few days beforehand... however, this hike should be avoided in heavy rain.

The elevation gain is approximately 100 metres.

Worth a visit

The village of Tjørnuvík at the end of the road (and the world?) is worth a visit for its peaceful atmosphere at the end of a fjord facing the Giant and Witch rocks.

On the same road, you will pass through the village of Haldarsvík, where there is a stunning and beautiful octagonal church that is particularly photogenic.
