Description of the walk

Park at the Salèse car park.

(S/E) Walk about ten metres and do not go straight on, but turn immediately left onto a small bridge to follow a path on the other side of the stream, which climbs steeply towards Lac des Adus. You will reach the junction at marker 396.

(1) Continue straight on towards Lac des Adus.

(2) Adus private refuge: top up your water supplies if needed at the tap in front of the refuge and continue towards the lake.

(3) Walk along the left bank of the beautiful Lac des Adus and follow a path that winds its way through small rocky outcrops. Reach the Col de la Vallette des Adus.

(4) Continue along a clearly visible path heading west. This path is not shown on the IGN map but is clearly marked on OSM Trails.

(5) Descent from Belletz: head off to the right, heading north-east. There are faint tracks that aren’t always clearly visible; don’t hesitate to simply make your own way up to the dominant peak, the summit of La Costette, which stretches along a ridge.

(6) On the ridge, continue due north to reach the foot of the day’s final ascent: a very short but steep climb, involving crossing a large rock outcrop. Take care on this section; watch your step. The easiest way is to cross by keeping to the left and following the cairns that are there to guide you. Climb up on the left where natural gullies are present, helping you avoid the huge piles of boulders as much as possible.

(7) Caïre Archas: a piece of wood indicates that you have reached the summit. You can catch your breath whilst enjoying a superb panoramic view of the whole area.

Follow the same route back to the car park (S/E).

A beautiful hike. The final climb is challenging, but you are rewarded with the view from the top.

A lovely hike that has it all: the trail starts off winding through pine trees, offers magnificent views of the surrounding mountains, and finishes with a rocky climb – just the sort of thing we love in the south!

I struggled to make out the path mentioned between points 4 and 5 during my walk; it was a bit of a struggle making my way up the grassy, stony slopes on a slope. In the end, I relied on the path to stay on course.

Between points 5 and 6, the freshly repainted (green) boundary markers for the Mercantour National Park serve as a good guide, even though you have to head straight for the summit.

At the summit of Le Caire, the view was magnificent! I came across very few people on the trails that day.

Hello Visio,

A lovely hike that really comes into its own during stage 2, from which point you’re treated to beautiful scenery all the way along.

Up to stage 1, it’s an uphill climb through the forest, with a fair bit of elevation gain, where we were lucky enough to spot a few chamois.
At stage 4, a stunning panorama awaits you. The weather prevented us from going beyond stage 6, but you’re already ‘high up’ there and the view is well worth the detour.

However, I think that on the final third towards stage 7, you need to be ‘sure-footed’. I may not be entirely objective as I’m prone to vertigo and we were still too far out to get a clear idea, but in my opinion it’s best left to experienced hikers. But up to stage 6, no worries.

Well worth doing for the beauty of the views.
