The Bresses lakes from the Salèse car park

Off the beaten track, these two small lakes in the Mercantour are both beautiful and uncrowded. Here I suggest a circular route that will allow you to avoid descending directly to the Col de Salèse and enjoy a view of Lac Nègre that you don't get when arriving via the traditional route.

Description of the walk

Once you have crossed Saint-Martin-Vésubie, head towards Boréon, pass the reservoir and, once you reach the climbing wall, turn left towards Mollières. Park at the Salèse car park a few kilometres further on, marker 397.

Preliminary note: at the end of the car park, a sign indicates that the path is currently closed due to damage caused by Storm Alex. You must therefore follow the Mollières track to the Col de Salèse, which runs alongside the classic route.

(S/E) In anticipation of the path reopening, this is the route mentioned on the map. Take this path and head towards the Col de Salèse.

(1) Pass marker 436, which indicates the direction of Les Adus, then descend the trail towards Mollières, following the red and white markings ofthe GR®52. You will soon come to the crossroads at marker 268.

(2) Head towards Lac Nègre. Reach marker 269 at the stream crossing. Continue a few steps further to find a trail junction.

(3) Turn onto the path on the right and continue climbing. After a few tight bends, you will reach the junction at marker 270 at Camp Soubran, where the direction of Lac de Frémamorte is indicated.

(4) Continue straight ahead, pass between two small lakes that are often dry, and leave theGR®. Please note: from here, the hike is off-trail, but nothing too complicated. There are several possible routes, marked by cairns here and there. Head north, and further on you will see the barrier ofthe first lake. Follow the cairns, keeping Caïre Ponchu on your left, until you reach a small gully.

(5) Turn left into the scree, climb up on the left, follow a few cairns again and you will come out at thefirst Bresses lake.

(6) Go around the rocks to the north on the right, then head north to reach thesecond Bresses lake, on a small beach to the south of the lake.

(7) Retrace your steps to return to thefirst lake.

(6) Turn right to walk along the lake to reach the Baisse du Lac Nègre. Descend to reach Lac Nègre.

(8) Take the path on the left along the lake, then continue downhill on a path that is now clearly visible. You will reach the Camp Soubran crossroads and marker 270.

(4) Bear right just before the marker and, after a slight climb, make a wide circular turn to cross a stream and reach an intersection at a place called Le Camp.

(9) Turn right uphill to reach a peat bog before Lac de Graveirette.

(10) Walk around this beautiful lake, then descend to the intersection at Le Camp.

(9) Turn right onto the downhill path and follow a series of hairpin bends to reach theGR®52crossroads at a ruin, just before marker 269.

(3) Turn right and retrace your steps to return to the Salèse car park at marker 397 (S/E).

Notes

There are numerous springs and streams along the route, but be careful: some time ago, I saw a sign in the hamlet of Mollières indicating that the water in the area was slightly contaminated with arsenic. Use it sparingly.
Between (4) and (8), the hike is entirely off-trail. Although there is nothing particularly dangerous, I still recommend that you have a basic knowledge of the mountains, especially as the cairns are not always visible. I have traced the route between these two points on the map from memory, but you may need to deviate slightly from the digital trail on the ground to take the most suitable path.

This route passes through a protected area, which may be subject to special regulations:

Very good description by the author of the guide. Having already visited Lake Graveirette shortly before, I didn't make the detour to go there. After the return loop that passes by Lake Nègre, we took the same route back to the car park at the start (Salèse). The tricky part is to carefully skirt around the small lake at Camp Soubran via a narrow track and not take the obvious GR52 path that heads towards the Col de Frémamorte. You pass close to the Caïre Punchu on your left.
On the way back, if you don't want to go to Lac de Graveirette, don't follow the obvious path that descends from Lac Nègre, but at around km 9.5 (at the hairpin bend), head towards "Camp Soubran" to rejoin the path you took on the way there.

Superb hike. We didn't take the detour via Lake Graveirette on the way back to marker 270, descending via a small path on the right just after the second lake at Camp Soubran. I highly recommend it.

This magnificent hike is one of my favourites: the landscape is varied and wild, the lakes are superb, and it is very rarely crowded. There are breathtaking views of the border mountains.
This year, all the lakes are full, even those at Camp Soubran.

A beautiful hike with breathtaking views of Lake Nègre from its lower reaches. The Bresses lakes offer a little peace and quiet compared to Lakes Nègre and Graveirette, which are quite crowded in early August... Note that you can go directly from Lake Nègre to Lake Graveirette by climbing the small hill on your right as you leave the lake and following a well-marked path down to Graveirette, which again offers superb views of this small lake.

A very beautiful hike with few people once you leave the main trail.
Two beautiful lakes in Bresse, well stocked with water and isolated. The markings are quite difficult to follow towards the lakes as there are many tracks. But outside the proposed route, there is a fairly visible track that also leads without any problems to the lower lake in its south-western centre, so don't panic! The descent to Lake Nègre offers a superb view of the lake. The shortcut to the last lake mentioned in the previous review is less obvious to find. There is an alternative route halfway between points 4 and 10, following a contour line. But the question arises as to whether it is reasonable, for the sake of nature, to stray from the paths...!
Thank you for the idea for this beautiful hike.

Hike completed on 12/08/2023-
I can confirm that Storm Alex did indeed alter the riverbed in the Salèses valley, but the trail is now partly on the right bank as it climbs and is more direct and relatively easy to follow to the Col de Salèse, despite the "no entry" sign, which I think is unnecessary (there is nothing dangerous to report).
To climb to the Lacs des Bresses after Camp Soubran, go straight up the valley after the first dry lake at the start of Frémamorte, stay as close as possible to the grassy area, avoid going into the scree, and higher up you will find a clearly visible path in the dry grass with small cairns leading to the top.Note that the upper lake can be reached from the start of the lower lake, opposite its beach, by climbing a small valley on its right and returning.
For the descent to Lac Nègre via the Baisse Nègre, take care as you will be walking on a steep slope, either in grass or on rocks, to reach some scree further down. Cross this as far to the left as possible to descend the grassy slope onto the path to Lac Nègre.
To get to Lac Graveirette, there is no need to go back down the path and its intersection. From the left bank of Lac Nègre, go down slightly to the left off the path and you will see Lac Graveirette, which you can reach via the grassy slopes.
This is a very beautiful alpine hike in a stunning area of the Mercantour, passing beneath the summit of Frémamorte with the Baisse Nègre offering views all the way to the bottom of the Cirque Nègre with the Pas de Préfouns, the Tablasses, and the northern and southern peaks of Les Bresses.

Superb hike. On the way there, we took the path that is normally closed but is passable. Be careful, however, as the riverbeds have been severely disrupted and it is sometimes difficult to find the right path. But the view at the end is worth the effort.
