Burgos - Iglesias

Fifty-seventh stage of the Camino de Santiago. After an urban interlude in Burgos, this stage takes you into the heart of the scorching landscapes of Castile. After Rabé de las Calzadas , you step straight onto a desert-like high plateau, dotted with villages nestled amidst the fields. Here, it is a desert of ploughed fields along a path that is often flat and straight, exposed to the wind or the beating sun! Protect yourself before you turn into a lobster.

(1) Continue straight on, keeping the monument on your left. Pass San Nicolás de Bari Church, followed by the Fernán González Arch ( a historic site ) and the Abba Hotel.

(2) Continue until you reach another historic site, the Solar del Cid. A pedestal on which stand three monoliths bearing the coats of arms of Burgos and San Pedro de Cardeña, with a commemorative inscription featuring El Cid’s coat of arms in the centre.

(3) Turn right to pass under the Arco de San Martín , a fortified archway. On the other side of the archway, go down the steps on the left to continue along Calle Emperador. Carry on until you reach the church of San Pedro de la Fuente.

(4) Turn left, walk past the church entrance and then the fountain, and head right along Calle Benedictinas de San José, following a stone wall. At the Mercadona supermarket, continue left along Calle Villalón, against the one-way traffic. You will reach a crossroads where the sculpture of La Laitière stands.

(5) Cross carefully to reach the park opposite. Walk past the San Pedro Fountain, then cross the Malatos footbridge over the River Arlanzón. Continue to the statue of Santo Domingo de la Calzada.

(6) Cross the N-120 with care, turn right and then immediately left onto Calle de Los Comendadores. Follow the stone wall and then quickly turn right through the opening to continue along a tree-lined path in El Parral Park. As you leave the park, you will find yourself in front of the Ermita de San Amaro Peregrino.

(7) Turn right, continue to the cross, then turn left onto Avenida José María Villacián Rebollo (N-120). Go round the roundabout anti-clockwise and continue straight ahead on the pedestrian path along Calle de Villadiego. Pass the University of Burgos and continue straight on to the roundabout.

(8) Go round this roundabout anti-clockwise and continue straight on to the traffic lights. Cross the N-120 with care.

(9) Turn right towards La Milanera and continue along Rue Benito Pérez Galdós, keeping to the left-hand pavement. Continue until you reach a sports ground.

(10) Continue along the small tarmac road, following the signs for Castilla y León, until you reach a crossroads near the River Arlanzón (on your right).

(11) Continue west-north-west, passing under a high-voltage power line before reaching a fork in the road.

(12) Keep going in the same direction until you reach a children’s playground and a roundabout.

(13) Turn right, then immediately left onto a very narrow lane that runs through the fields. Continue until you pass under a railway line.

(14) Go under the railway and turn left (south-west) to continue through the fields. At the fork, take the left-hand track and carry on until you reach the crossroads.

(15) Head north-west, cross the bridge over the BU-600 to the crossroads.

(16) At a hairpin bend, turn left to join the BU-600. Follow this road on the left-hand side and continue until you pass under the BU-30 motorway.

(18) Go under this road, skirt a river (Rio Alanzon) and turn left to reach the junction with the N-120 at a silo.

(22) Cross carefully, then first turn right then left to continue along Calle Real. At Plaza Leandro Mayoral, turn slightly left towards the church bell tower which towers above the houses. Continue along Calle Real Pte, pass the church and carry on straight ahead to reach a junction by the rubbish bins.

(23) Head left, pass under the high-voltage power line, then leave the village to continue through vast farmland. At the fork, keep heading west-south-west until you reach the River Urbel.

(27) Head north-west to the next fork.

(28) Head straight on (west) and continue along the tarmac road, ignoring the other paths, until you reach a rest area.
