Discovering the gems of Burgos

The sheer number of things to do in Burgos is impressive: religious and secular monuments, parks, museums, fountains, statues and so on. Among the places to visit, perhaps the most important is the Cathedral of Santa María, a Gothic-style Catholic church converted into a museum. Inside, it houses numerous chapels, each of which is a small museum in its own right. Not far from the altar, on the floor, lies the tombstone of El Cid and Chimène. Also not to be missed are the Monastery of Santa María la Real de Las Huelgas, Burgos Castle, the historic centre, the Miraflores Charterhouse, and so on.
I spent a day visiting Burgos, at the end of the fifty-sixth stage of my Camino de Santiago.

Description of the walk

Depending on where you’re staying, head towards Santa Maria Cathedral on Rey San Fernando Square.

(S/E) After visiting the cathedral and its museum, with your back to the entrance, turn right and then right again to climb the steps leading to Plaza Santa María. Walk past the fountain and continue along Calle Santa Águeda. Walk between the diocesan archives building and the Church of Santiago de Santa Águeda to reach a stop sign. Walk a few metres further and turn right up the steps. Weaving your way between the residential buildings, you will reach Fernán González Street. Continue to the Arch of Fernán González.

(1) Continue along Rue Fernán Gonzáles. Walk past the Church of San Nicolás de Bari and then behind the cathedral.

(2) Just past the cathedral, take the stairs on your left which lead you to the front of San Esteban Church. Once at the foot of the church, turn right and go round the building on your left. You will arrive in front of a fountain. Cross carefully and head up the ramp to reach the Route du Château. Turn left and begin a short climb that leads you to the entrance of Burgos Castle (open to visitors).

(3) Continue northwards to go round the ramparts on your right. After a few hundred metres, you’ll arrive next to a tower. Head right to take the stairs and arrive on Calle Álvar Fáñez in front of the Arco de San Esteban fortress.

(4) Turn left to go down the street. At the fork, turn right and, ignoring the one-way street, continue right along Calle de las Corazas to the Church of San Gil Abad: access to the church is via the path to the right of it.

(5) Return to Calle de las Corazas and continue straight on to Calle San Francisco. Pass the Cáritas Diocesana de Burgos (charity organisation) and then turn right in front of the ruins of the Convent of San Francisco. Continue along Calle Azorín to the Puertas de la Muralla monument.

(6) Turn left onto Calle José Zorrilla, then turn right onto Calle Antonio Valdés y Bazan. You will arrive at Avenida del Cid Campeador. Head right, cross the avenue carefully at the pedestrian crossing, then continue right for a few dozen metres. Turn left to pass under a building and arrive at Plaza España. Cross the square diagonally to reach the large roundabout at the Fuente de los Delfines. Cross to the right to pass the roundabout on your left, then turn right onto Calle San Lesmes to find yourself between the Church of San Lesmes Abad and the sculpture Los Gigantillos, depicting two giant pilgrims.

(7) Walk alongside the church, then turn left to cross Plaza San Juan and pass in front of the Monastery of San Juan. Continue to the right along Calle Aurelio Alemán. Walk on until the junction opposite the Subdelegación del Gobierno building in Burgos (government office), then turn right. Then turn left to cross Calle Vitoria carefully, and head towards the traffic lights on the right. Turn left onto Calle Gran Teatro. Continue to the traffic lights and cross carefully to continue along the Evolución Humana footbridge. You are now on the other side of the Río Arlanzón in front of the statue of the Atapuerca Man.

(8) Head right to walk along the river. You’ll arrive at the San Pablo Bridge. Turn right and cross this beautiful bridge featuring statues of figures associated with El Cid. Walk past the left side of the Monumento al Cid Campeador and turn left onto the pedestrianised Espolón Street. Continue along this street lined with majestic trees, pass the entrance to the park (you can go in if you have time) and carry on until you reach Plaza del Espolón, in front of the superb medieval gateway known as the Arco de Santa María.

(9) Cross the Santa María Bridge, then turn right after it to walk alongside the river. Pass the Bessón Bridge and then the Castilla Bridge. Continue along the river to the north-west, passing in front of the Church of the Esclavas del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, and carry on until you reach the fork.

(10) Cross Avenida Palencia with care and follow signs for Monasterio de las Huelgas along the avenue of the same name. Pass a roundabout and continue in this direction (west) until you reach the monastery’s outer wall. Turn right and continue to the entrance tower of the Monasterio de las Huelgas. Please note: the monastery can only be visited on a guided tour in Spanish.

(11) Continue north-west along Calle Bernardino Obregón. Walk to the end of the street to reach the entrance to the Parque del Parral. At the ‘Give Way’ sign, turn right onto Calle de los Comendadores. Continue to the end of the street, at the junction with the N-120, and cross carefully to cross the Malatos Bridge.

(12) Turn right after the bridge and head into the woods, following the river on your right. Pass the La Isla Fountain and a children’s playground before arriving at the Arcos de Castilfalé site.

(13) Walk through the historic site and then continue left until you reach a roundabout. Go round it, take the fourth exit, and head north-east along Calle Barrantes. Walk past the Monastery of La Visitación, then turn right onto Calle Eduardo Martínez del Campo, going against the one-way traffic. Stay on this street until the bend to the right. Then turn left to follow the pedestrian path that runs alongside the river. Continue to Plaza del Espolón to find yourself in front of the medieval gateway known as the Arco de Santa María.

(9) Continue to the left to pass under the arch and arrive on Rey San Fernando, opposite the cathedral (S/E).

Notes

If you’re walking the Camino de Santiago, don’t forget your pilgrim’s passport to benefit from reduced rates for any visits.
Allow a full day for this route. Visiting the cathedral alone takes over two hours. Please note that rucksacks are not permitted during the route: lockers are available. If you’re not too tired, do pop into the old town in the evening. It’s very lively outside the tapas bars and the illuminated monuments are well worth a look.
