Castle Trail (9): Dossenheim – Heidelberg

"Nature experience combined with sporty hiking" ... this is how the Burgensteig trail is described in the official flyer of Tourismus Service Bergstraße e.V. The Burgensteig trail leads from Darmstadt-Eberstadt along the heights of the Odenwald to Heidelberg. Along the approximately 120 km, you will pass over 30 historical sights and cross two other well-known trails, the Nibelungensteig near Zwingenberg and the Neckarsteig in Heidelberg. We took the liberty of deviating from the "standard" route here and there.

We have put together the stages so that you can get to your starting point and back from your destination by public transport. Our version is therefore about 20 km longer than the original.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: 9 stages on the Burgensteig (Bergstraße)

Description of the walk

To get to Weinheim main station, take the RE 60 from Frankfurt or Mannheim and then continue with the RNV line 5 to Dossenheim station or with the RNV line 5 from Heidelberg main station to Dossenheim station.

Departure from the final stop at Heidelberg Market Square (HD-Altstadt stop) with the S-Bahn to Heidelberg Main Station and from there continue with regional or long-distance Deutsche Bahn services.

(S) The starting point for your final stage is Dossenheim station. Walk around the building to Beethovenstraße and turn right. Follow Beethovenstraße, which becomes Schlüsselweg after crossing Friedrichstraße.

Opposite the Sankt-Pankratius-Kirche, turn right onto Kirchstraße. After a few metres, turn left onto Im Hassel and walk along this road until you reach the outskirts of the town. The road becomes Am Neuberg.

Follow this road towards the Leferenz quarry. Opposite the entrance to the quarry, you will pass the Beans of Joy café and continue straight ahead on the paved road above Dossenheim. You will reach the edge of the forest. Your path gradually turns into a forest trail.

(1) In a left-hand bend, you will rejoin the Burgensteig and continue along the narrow path to the right. At the next T-junction, keep left and follow this path until the next T-junction.

(2) Here, turn right. A few metres after the fork, you will see a small monolith on the left. The Burgensteig sign is painted there.

Follow the path downhill along the Hellenbach stream until you come to a road. Turn left here and walk slightly uphill along the road.

After a while, you will reach another T-junction. Turn right and follow the path downhill.

At the next fork, keep left, leave the paved path and continue above the wooden fence until you reach the next T-junction. Here, continue downhill to the left.

(3) At the next fork, keep left again. There is also a stone signpost there. Continue walking towards Siebenmühlental.

Your path now turns into a paved path. It goes uphill. In the right-hand bend at the height of a bench, keep left and continue up the narrow path ("Kriegsweg").

(4) After the steep climb, you will come to a paved path. Opposite, a bench invites you to take a short break. Continue along the road ("Oberer Bahofweg") down to the "Turnerbrunnen" hiking car park.

(5) Walk straight ahead towards the fountain and turn left behind the fountain onto a narrow path (towards "Zollstock"). Now the trail climbs again.

Cross a road and continue diagonally uphill on the other side of the narrow path until you come to a forest path, which you cross.

(6) After a while, you will come to a fork with a stone signpost. Continue to the right towards "Zollstock". At the next T-junction, continue uphill to the left.

(7) You will come to the main path and turn left to the "Schlossblick" refuge at the Zollstockbrunnen fountain. Here you can enjoy a beautiful view of Heidelberg Castle and take a break.

Continue on the main path from the hut to the left. Walk straight ahead until you reach a right-hand bend.

(8) Here, turn left onto the forest path (signposted "Heiligenberg footpath"). At the next fork, keep right and turn right at the Thingstätte to the St. Michael monastery ruins.

(9) Pass through the iron gate to enter the grounds. It is worth climbing the taller of the two towers. From there, you have a view of the ruins of the monastery complex.

(10) From the monastery complex, walk straight into the Thingstätte and down the steps to the stage. To the right of the stage, exit again and head downhill to the left.

(11) You walk straight towards the Waldschenke with its beer garden. This is a welcome and usually well-frequented place to stop for refreshments before tackling the remaining kilometres of this stage.

The next historic building is already waiting for you to visit. Follow the road downhill and pass the car park.

(12) You will then reach the ruins of St. Stephen's Monastery. Here, too, it is worth climbing the tower.

(13) A few metres further down the road, on the right-hand side, is a round building with the Heidenloch(heathen hole). Several information boards explain the state of research, its origins and possible uses.

Continue downhill until you reach a fork (there is a speed limit of 30 km/h painted on the road). Turn sharp left here and take the right-hand path at the next fork.

(14) You will reach the Fuchs-Rondell, a covered seating area with a view of Heidelberg and the Neckar Valley. From here, take the right-hand path downhill towards Hirschgasse.

(15) You will come to a wider forest path and turn sharp right. After a while, you will come to a T-junction, turn left here and then immediately right again.

(16) Now walk straight towards the Bismarck Tower. Pass the Bismarck Tower on your right and take the narrow path downhill at the fork in the road immediately after.

Walk down several steps through the Eichdorf park until you reach a paved path. Turn right here and then take a sharp left at the next intersection. At the intersection, there is a kiosk on the right-hand side where you can purchase refreshments.

(17) You are now on the Heidelberg Philosophenweg(Philosophers' Way). Follow this path, passing Liselotte-Platz with a playground, and shortly afterwards you will reach the turnoff to Heidelberg's old town.

(18) Now walk down the steep cobblestone Schlangenweg. At the bottom, cross the "Neuenheimer Landstraße".

(19) The last few metres take you over the Alte Brücke (Old Bridge) and, on the other side, turn left into Obere Neckarstraße. Now turn right into Fischergasse and follow it to the Marktplatz (market square).

(E) You have reached the end of the Burgensteig.
