Burgensteig (8): Schriesheim - Dossenheim

"Nature experience combined with sporty hiking" ... this is how the Burgensteig trail is described in the official flyer of Tourismus Service Bergstraße e.V. The Burgensteig trail leads from Darmstadt-Eberstadt along the heights of the Odenwald to Heidelberg. Along the approximately 120 km, you will pass over 30 historical sights and cross two other well-known trails, the Nibelungensteig near Zwingenberg and the Neckarsteig in Heidelberg. We took the liberty of deviating from the "standard" route here and there.

We have put together the stages so that you can get to your starting point and back from your destination by public transport. Our version is therefore about 20 km longer than the original.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: 9 stages on the Burgensteig (Bergstraße)

Description of the walk

To get to Weinheim main station, take the RE 60 from Frankfurt or Mannheim and then continue with RNV line 5 to Schriesheim station or with RNV line 5 from Heidelberg main station to Schriesheim station.

Departure from Dossenheim station with the RNV line 5 to Weinheim or Heidelberg main station and from there continue with the regional or long-distance service of Deutsche Bahn.

(S) This stage starts at Schriesheim station. Walk across Schillerplatz, past the water fountains and into Schillerstraße, then turn left and shortly afterwards right into Bahnhofstraße. At Bismarckstraße, turn left and after the supermarket turn right into Kirchstraße.

(1) Follow this road until you reach the old town. Pass the Protestant church, cross "Heidelberger Straße" and turn left into a narrow alley at "Mainzer Land" (information board 7, old town tour).

You will pass "Pfarrer-Eberhardt-Platz" and shortly afterwards turn right into "Obere Schulgasse". Cross the schoolyard to the left, walk around the adult education centre building, go up the steps and keep left at the top (signposted "Strahlenburg").

After a few metres, you will reach Burgweg, which you follow uphill to the right. Shortly after the house with the number 23, turn right onto a narrow path.

(2) This will take you further uphill to the gate of the Strahlenburg. Here, turn left, walk to the end of the car park and turn right. Follow this path uphill to the edge of the forest and turn left, walking along the vineyard for a short distance.

You will come to a crossroads and continue straight ahead uphill. The path is paved with grass pavers. At the end of the grass pavers, you will come to a paved path. Turn right here.

You are now back on the Burgensteig (signposted with a blue castle on a white background) and walk along the slope. At the end of the vineyards, you will reach the edge of the forest, where the path changes from asphalt to slightly gravel.

(3) After a while, you will reach a covered seating area with a view of the Rhine valley. You may want to take a short break here. Continue along the forest path.

You will come to a fork in the path; take the left (wider) path and stay at the same altitude until you reach a crossroads.

(4) Here, take the narrow path uphill on the left (look for the Burgensteig signposts). The narrow path joins a forest road again.

(5) It is now not far to the Schauenburg castle ruins. You will reach the rest area in front of the ruins without any further turnoffs. At the rest area (there are other rest areas in the grounds), you can turn right to take a tour of the castle.

Many information boards provide historical background information and explain what was built where. You will come out on the other side of the castle via the wooden bridge and continue along the wide forest path to the right at the level of the rest area.

(6) You will come to a paved path and continue to the left. After a few metres, the paved path turns into a gravel forest path and goes uphill.

At the next crossroads, continue straight ahead and at the following crossroads, stay on the main path, which leads you back along the slope.

(7) You will reach the "Am Kottenbrunnen" crossroads, keep left and continue slightly uphill in a right-hand bend.

At the next crossroads, turn right. The path descends slightly. Keep right at the next fork and turn left at the next one.

(8) There is a sturdy raised hide on the right-hand side . Walk along the "Steinbruchweg" (quarry path). In a long right-hand bend, turn sharp right and walk down a forest path until you reach a forest road again.

(9) Follow this to the left and then immediately turn right again. Follow the forest road, which leads you slightly uphill again.

(10) Shortly before the apex, you can turn right onto a narrow path and explore the remains of the Kronenburg ruins. This detour is unmarked, so you will have to find your own way through the terrain. The GPX track will give you some points of reference.

Back on the forest path, continue to the right. At the next T-junction, turn right and, before a slight left-hand bend, turn left onto a narrow path uphill.

(11) You will reach another forest road and turn sharp right. Follow this road until you reach a fork and take the left, narrow path (orientation: Burgensteig signposts).

(12) You will reach the refuge hut at the "Drei Eichen" car park. Walk past it on the wide path to the right, pass a barrier and, after the left-hand bend, turn right onto a narrow path that leads you further downhill (small sign: Feldbogenverein Dossenheimer Steinbrecher). Pass another barrier, come to a wide path and follow it to the right.

(13) Before the entrance to the field archery club grounds, continue to the left until you reach the viewpoint. Here you have a wonderful panoramic view of the Upper Rhine Plain. Back on the path, hike downhill.

(14) On the way down, you will pass another viewpoint and come across some information boards ("Geopunkte") about the history of the quarry and the geotope. In a left-hand bend, you will reach a rest area.

(15) Continuing along the path, you will come to the viewpoint at the "Schneggeloch" quarry museum. Depending on the vegetation, you may be able to admire some mining artefacts at the bottom of the quarry. Back at the rest area, continue downhill to the right.

(16) You will pass another rest area on your left. In our opinion, it is more beautiful than the one above the road.

(17) Continuing along the path, you will pass an old stone quarry before turning right opposite the "Beans of Joy" café towards Dossenheim into the street "Am Neuberg".

Follow the road, which after a while becomes Im Hassel, until you reach Kirchstraße. Turn right there. At the crossroads opposite St. Pankratius Church, turn left into Schlüsselweg. Schlüsselweg becomes Beethovenstraße.

(E) This will take you to the end of your stage, Dossenheim station.
