Loop on the Haut de Belué

A short but very beautiful hike to the summit of Haut de Bélué, 870 m high. It overlooks the Grandrupt valley and offers a superb panorama of the Haute Moselle valley, dominated by the silhouettes of the Alsace and Servance balloons. The site features a forest chalet open to the public, a children's play area, picnic tables and an orientation table with a view of the Vosges ridges.

Description of the walk

Access: from the centre of Rupt-sur-Moselle, take the D466 towards Le Thillot. At the hamlet of Saulx, turn left towards "vallée de Grandrupt", then in the valley, turn left towards "site de Bélué". The road passes close to Haut Pré before reaching the Col de la Croix du Lait.

Parking: Col de la Croix du Lait.

(S/E) Go back down the small tarmac road taken by car for about 650 m.

(1) At the end of the right-hand bend, just before the road drops sharply, turn right along a small, unmarked grassy path through the ferns. (There are quite a few brambles, which are dry in March. If this small section was poorly cleared, you could continue along the road for a further 150 m before turning right onto the next well-cleared path). Walk among the many broom trees that invade this path, which offers a lovely view of Ferdrupt.

(2) Leave the path and fork right at a 90° angle onto a path that rises up, is not signposted (and not visible on the IGN map) but is nonetheless well marked. The path climbs quietly through the forest for 600 m and, after a right-hand hairpin bend, joins the path signposted Chevalet Bleu.

(3) Follow it to the right, continuing uphill until you reach a small shed and a wide track, which you follow to the left to quickly reach the Chalet de Bélué (a refuge with several indoor and outdoor tables,an orientation table and a magnificent view that makes for an ideal picnic break).

(4) Continue to the right of the chalet along the path marked Anneau Bleu.

(5) Just before the path rises slightly, turn right at a hairpin bend along an unmarked downhill path. A little further on, ignore a path rising to the right, not visible on the map, as you continue downhill. The path is damp with lots of water running off at the end of winter. Join a wider forest track in the area known as "Le Halay" , which offers a fine view of "Le-dessus-de-Rupt".

(6) Continue along the forest track back to the Col de la Croix du Lait, where you can park (S/E).

Practical information

Take care: the access road to the Col de la Croix du Lait is very narrow. Impossible to pass each other, especially in the final stretch.

Path a little rough between (1) and (2). Possibility of taking the next path on the right, 150 m further on.
The path is damp in places between (4) and (S/E) (run-off water) at certain times of the year.
Good footwear recommended.

Lovely, wide, natural, open space at Chalet de Bélué (5). Ideal for children. Small swing.
Refuge open to the public with two indoor tables and four outdoor picnic tables.
Orientation table and magnificent views.

From the Croix du Lait, youcan walk 1 km to the Chalet de Bélué along a forest path signposted Anneau Bleu and Croix Bleue.
