Saint-Léger-du-Ventoux - Brantes loop

A very beautiful hike north of Mont Ventoux, between the magnificent villages of Saint-Léger-du-Ventoux and Brantes. A climb via the Chaussène and Fontaube passes and a return trip along the banks of the Toulourenc.

Description of the walk

Parking is available at the entrance to the village of Saint-Léger-du-Ventoux, on the edge of the D40. If the ten or so parking spaces are all taken, the hike can start a little further on, just after the bridge on the right.

(S/E) From the car park, head south-east towards Saint-Léger-du-Ventoux. Take the pedestrian crossing to cross the departmental road, then turn left to visit the beautiful village of Saint-Léger. Next, cross the village and join the D40, following it for about 200 metres towards the cemetery.

GR®91signposting

(1) Turn left onto the street towards the cemetery and follow the path, which climbs gently at first, then more steeply. After 1 km, pass the Col de Chaussène (679 m).

(2) Turn right and then, about 150 m further on, turn right again towards the Col de Fautaube (655 m).

(3) At the Col de Fontaube, take the D41 on the right until you reach a small path on the right.

(4) Leave the D41 and take theGR® on the right. It will take you directly to the village of Brantes. Admire the beautiful Christole farm as you pass by.

GR®9signposting

(5) Enter the village through the Porte du Haut and visit the many paved slanting streets, the ruins of the medieval castle, the Church of Saint-Sidoine and its trompe-l'oeil interior, the Chapel of Notre-Dame-de-Pitié des Pénitents Blancs, and the information point on the work carried out by the local association for the restoration of the site. Then carefully begin the descent towards the cemetery and the Toulourenc.

(6) Turn right to follow the cemetery and join the D40. Cross it and continue straight ahead on the path, crossing the old bridge known as the "Pont Romain".
Continue north-west until you reach the D164TER, turn left and follow it to the next intersection.

:7:: Take the path on the right (west) and after about 100 metres, turn left and continue south-west.

(8) Continue right on theGR®9towards the abandoned hamlet of La Barbettes, then Les Vaisses.

Leave theGR®9trail

(9) Turn right towards the north-west. Join a track at a hairpin bend and follow it to the Saint-Basile Chapel.

(10) Turn left (northwest) onto the D40 and walk carefully for 1.5 km along this road until you reach the bridge over the Toulourenc.

GR®91signposting

(11) Do not cross the bridge, but take the small road opposite which will lead you to a footbridge. Cross the footbridge and rejoin the D40 and the car park (A/D).

Don't miss a visit to the cemetery and the Saint-Jean-Baptiste Chapel, the village's first church, dating from the 12th century.
Admire the old bridge, known as the "Roman Bridge", which spans the Toulourenc with a single arch and dates from the 13th century.

The Saint-Basile Chapel, at the top of a small hill above a bend in the river.
In the 19th century, a pilgrimage started in Brantes to pray for the healing of infants suffering from cradle cap (a disease known as "la gourme"), as the number of wet nurses in Saint-Léger and Brantes was surprisingly high for such small villages.

The first part of the hike starts with a fairly steep climb but with a beautiful view of Ventoux. Visiting the small village of Brantes is definitely worth the detour. We arrived at midday and there was a small restaurant open where we could eat, then we descended via Toulourenc to avoid the road sections, which can be quite dangerous. The hike is very well marked. We completed it in 5 hours and 20 minutes, as indicated. The only downside is the sections on the road

Magnificent first part with a view of Mont Ventoux. A good, fairly gradual climb, and best of all, in the shade in the morning. The village of Brante is a lovely stop with places to eat at the end of September. The return journey is through the woods (still in the shade) with a final stretch on the road. A very beautiful walk that is not accessible even in summer.

Nice climb, not difficult, followed by a not too long stretch on a safe road
Pleasant visit to a beautiful village
The only downside to this hike is the final stretch of over a kilometre on a fairly busy road in good weather.

This loop is interesting and offers beautiful views of Mont Ventoux and Montagne de Bluye. The village of Brantes is worth a visit. However, and this is a major drawback, the return journey along the D40 from Moulin Nonin is awful and dangerous! In addition, the route takes a private or privatised path at PK 12.3, which is almost impossible to pass (even though I did it). I therefore recommend returning along the Toulourenc, walking on the stone banks if the water level allows it (preferably in summer).

Very beautiful route, lovely panoramic views. Very enjoyable visit to Brantes.
We had lunch by the Toulourenc river and dipped our feet in the water, which was very pleasant.
However, the last few kilometres on the busy departmental road were really unpleasant.

Hello, great route, easy to follow, with a big difference in landscape between the outward and return journeys, which was fantastic.

However, the end, when we got back onto the tarmac, wasn't great, but there wasn't much choice ;-) What's more, according to a local resident, the route seems to go through her property, so we had to turn back.

the first part up to Brantes was very good, with beautiful views of Vantoux and the charming village of Brantes. The second part, from the Roman bridge to Saint-Léger, was uninteresting, not to mention the final 2 km on the departmental road

An invigorating and very pleasant hike, magnificent panoramic views, passing through pretty, picturesque villages, plenty of shade along the route, which was very welcome as the sun was very hot. The start is quite challenging, with almost all the elevation gain on a climb of easily 3 km... You need to be prepared, which wasn't necessarily specified in the comments... With the route via the app (Premium subscription), there were no problems finding your way. We loved this loop and the landscapes are breathtaking!

A very pleasant loop trail featured in an old guidebook (starting in Brantes).
The varied paths are best enjoyed in mid-season when the heat in the scree areas is bearable and the Toulourenc river is still flowing.

I was able to park at the point (10) to start on the road and warm up for the climb up (1). However, the St Basile chapel can no longer be approached as it is surrounded by houses with fences.
I'll have to come back when the autumn colours are out!

Very interesting: on the border between Vaucluse and Drôme, you can see the Baronnies valleys and hundred-year-old oak trees near Brantes, an unusual village with steps everywhere. After point 9, there are huge maritime pines. The downsides at the end of the route: the Saint-Basile chapel, which is privately owned and inaccessible, and a 1.5 km stretch along a road with little verge and a straight section where cars speed up.

A very interesting hike with the trail starting from St Léger and featuring informative signs. It's educational and the scenery is beautiful. The passage through Brantes, a very pretty village, is poorly signposted and we had to try several times to find our way out. The rest of the route is pleasant, with a Roman bridge and a more wooded section. As everyone else has said, the final stretch along the road is awful and leaves a bad impression.
For those who would like to swim, take sandals or shoes that can go in the water. There are two possible spots: at the Roman bridge or the bridge just before St Léger

A beautiful hike with a long climb up to the Col de Fontaube. The pretty village of Brantes is a great place to stop and refresh yourself.
In St Léger du Ventoux, don't hesitate to ask Mr David how the clock opposite the house with blue shutters got there.
It's a shame that the last 1.5 km is on tarmac and a fairly busy road.

A beautiful hike with a short break at the mini market in Brantes (Sunday mornings, with a few local producers)!
Swimming in the Ouvèze river under the Roman bridge
Everything was perfect until we reached the stretch of road where, at the weekend, there is a lot of traffic and people drive very fast (there must be a lot of Porsches in the area...). Be careful.
Thank you for this beautiful route (14.5 km on the odometer)
