Mont Ventoux via the western ridge and the Rochers de Cachillan

A beautiful hike or snowshoe trek, depending on the season, starting from Mont Serein and climbing to the summit via the western ridge of the Rochers de Cachillan.
Undoubtedly the wildest and most stunning way to reach the summit.

Description of the walk

Park at the Chalet Liotard car park.

(S/E) Set off along the road leading up to the summit. You will reach a hairpin bend with a barrier blocking the road.

(1) Leave the road and take the track opposite, the Tête du Chauva track, to the signpost for Le Casséu.

(2) Leave the track and turn left towards the east and the summit. Continue along a long, unmarked section through the forest; it is not very intuitive, but numerous cairns help you stay on course.
Take care in this section as there are technical sections: significant elevation gain and numerous rocks and crevasses. Exercise extreme caution in snowy conditions, as the crevasses are buried. Numerous snowdrifts.
Suitable equipment is essential, particularly boots, snowshoes and poles.
Avoid in strong winds. The forest section remains sheltered but the ridge is very exposed.
Continue eastwards. Reach the paragliding launch site.

(3) Continue past the radar to reach the penultimate hairpin bend before the summit.

(4) Leave the road and take the path running parallel to the right of the road that climbs to the chapel and then to the summit of Mont Ventoux. Enjoy the summit and its views over the southern slopes and the eastern ridge.

(5) Depending on traffic conditions (whether the road is open or not) and snow cover, descend via the road, which is very pleasant in winter when there is heavy snow. Return to the hairpin bend you passed earlier.

(4) Keep to the right on the road and continue the descent. Follow a long path to return to the initial crossroads passed on the way up.

(1) Follow the same route as on the way up to return to the Chalet Liotard car park (S/E).

A magnificent hike with beautiful scenery. However, on the way back in good weather, there are many pleasant trails that are much more interesting than the road,
descend via the Jas des Pèlerins, the tall pine trees and the Tête de Chauva trail
or descend via the GR 4 trail from the orientation table to the Mont Serein campsite, where you may be lucky enough to see chamois in the valleys.

A really lovely, steep but enjoyable hike – it took me five hours without pushing myself too hard, including a lunch break, some photos and plenty of time to soak up the scenery. The return journey along the road was nice and hassle-free.

Taken on 21 December when there was very little snow, but with a fierce wind on the ridges and a temperature of minus 4 degrees.
The chapel at the summit was a welcome place to have a bite to eat out of the wind.
As the sky was clear, we had a beautiful view of the snow-capped mountains of the Vercors, the Dévoluy, etc.
The ridges are not recommended when there is only a little snow. This is not enough to fill the gaps but enough to make the rocks slippery. We therefore crossed the ridges with the utmost caution. Despite a few minor slips, we managed to avoid falling onto the sharp limestone pavement.

I did this route at the end of October; the section along the ridges can be a bit tricky, so it’s best to be sure-footed. However, I really enjoyed it.

I did the western section of the ridge in September; it’s a long, difficult climb over the rocks, so I wouldn’t recommend it.
The weather conditions were fine; the route along the western ridge, taken in the opposite direction, is rather dangerous and should be avoided.
