Circular through six Aubrac burons (stone huts) from Lac des Moines

Burons are an integral part of the architectural heritage of the Aubrac. These small stone houses were once used by farmers to watch over their cows and produce cheese during the summer. Although they are part of the landscape and soul of the Aubrac, today nearlytwo-thirds of them are disappearing due to lack of use. Let's give them back the interest they deserve by walking alongside them! This hike will take you from buron to buron, through magnificent landscapes and unusual discoveries. Come and walk, observe, picnic and maybe soon sleep in these refuges that are just waiting for you!

Description of the walk

Park at the edge of Lac des Moines and take a moment to admire this immense expanse of water.

(S/E) Walk along the fences that surround it, moving slightly away from the shore to reach the Pasquier Haut buron

(1) Then climb up to the GR®65 (D987), turn right, then turn right again (D219) at the next intersection. 60 metres further on, turn left. Go through the gates to reach the edge of the fields. Walk along the fences, taking care to avoid the cows during the summer grazing season, until you reach the Fontanilles Haut buron.

(2) Continue along the fences until you reach the Fontanilles du Milieu buron. Throughout this route, you will see many burons in the distance, recognisable by their low stone walls and slate roofs, such as the Fontanilles buron or the Fontanilles Bas buron. All of them are now unused and in varying states of disrepair, mainly due to their inaccessibility.

(3) Continue straight ahead along the fence until you see the Puech Crémat Bas buron in the distance. Continue on to reach the old Roman road.

(4) Turn left onto it, then discover the Puech Saint-Geniez buron, which has been renovated to host various events. Continue following the fence until you reach the GR®670.

(5) Turn right and you will soon reach the Barthas burons.

(6) Continue along the GR® to reach the buildings at Montorzier.

(7) Continue on a very slight incline, see the Théron buron on your left, then join a road on the edge of a peat bog

(8) Leave the GR® here and take this road on the right. You will come out onto the D219 and follow it to the right. Stay on this road until you reach the Cammejane buron crossroads.

(9) Turn left to reach this buron.

(10) Return along the same route to the previous crossroads.

(9) Turn left onto the D219. At Lac des Moines, turn left to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

Water: fill your water bottles before setting off, as there are no drinking water points along the route.
Respect for the environment: pick up all your rubbish and leave no trace of your passage (no paper, graffiti or cigarette butts). Respect the peace and quiet of the area and the tranquillity of the residents and other walkers.
Heritage: observe the burons without damaging them and do not enter buildings that are in ruins, dangerous or fragile.
Wildlife and livestock: do not cross a field occupied by cows, especially if there are calves present. Walk around them calmly and keep your distance. Crossing property is your responsibility. Stay on the marked trails as much as possible and always close gates behind you.
Safety: wear good walking shoes and bring clothing suitable for changing weather conditions.

Worth a visit

Starting from Lac des Moines, set off to discover the burons, small stone buildings that are emblematic of the Aubrac plateau. Along the route, you will come across burons in very different states of repair: some in ruins, others renovated and converted into dwellings, shelters or agricultural sheds.

The different burons encountered:
(1) Buron du Pasquier Haut: a large building divided into three sections: the cellar, the cheese-making workshop and the living quarters. Today, it is used as summer accommodation for watching over the cows during the summer grazing season.
(2) Buron des Fontanilles Haut: the most curious visitors can risk a peek inside to see the effect of time on this crumbling architectural heritage. However, please do not enter: the structure is fragile and the buron is not a safe refuge.
(3) Buron des Fontanilles du Milieu: without entering the property, you can see a buron that has been renovated into a dwelling.
Between (3) and (4) Buron du Puech Crémat Bas: renovated with a tin roof and now used as a farm shed. Between (4) and (5) Buron Puech Saint-Geniez: renovated for seminars.
Between (7) and (8) Buron du Théron: converted into seasonal accommodation.
(10) Buron de Camejane: here you can sample many regional specialities, including an excellent aligot.

With its spectacular views, pastoral history and changing heritage, this hike offers a unique journey into the heart of the Aubrac.
