Circular via the Croix de Morenci at the foot of Montségur.

Hike starting from Lavelanet with a very steep climb through the woods, followed by magnificent panoramic views of Montségur Castle, to reach the Croix de Morenci and its charming metal origami bison sculptures. Beautiful view of Mont Fourcat as well.

Description of the walk

Parking is available in a fairly large car park at the junction of Rue des Pyrénées and Rue Jacquard.

(S/E) Take Rue Jacquard to the right and turn left towards Collège Louis Pasteur to cross the Touyre. Then turn right to follow the river.

(1) Walk past the gymnasium, turning left, then go around the stadium on the right.

(2) Turn right onto the path and climb up to the road. Continue to the right, walking carefully along the road, and go to the place called Malbastit.

(3) Leave the road and follow the path that goes straight ahead at the bend. Keep left at the fork that appears about 200 metres further on. Enter the undergrowth, turn left, then right and arrive at the RD509, which connects Villeneuve d'Olmes to Bénaix.

(4) Cross it carefully and then turn right to follow it for about a hundred metres, then turn left towards the south towards La Cathofe. Pass the hamlet and follow the path that climbs very steeply through the woods: the IGN map is incorrect on this section.

(5) When you reach the ridge, turn left heading south-east. On the descent, you will see the Château de Montségur on its pog (rocky outcrop).

(6) At the bottom of the hill, turn left onto the GR®7B: white and red markings. Pass in front of the Lodge des Moureux and continue to the Croix de Morenci: enjoy the view.

(7) Descend to the left along the road for a few dozen metres, then take the path that descends to the left and eventually joins the road below.

(8) Continue down the road. After 300 metres, take the path on the left that runs along the fence and cuts across the bend. Return to the road and continue straight ahead to the junction with Route de l'Esqueillou in Marque-Flous.

(9) Cross it carefully, leaving the GR® trail, and follow Route de la Carole opposite until you reach Malbastit.

(3) Stay on the road and follow the outward route in reverse to the car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

(7) Metal origami representing bison: very original!

A very beautiful route overall, a little muddy in places but easier to walk in freezing weather. The rough part is indeed very difficult for those who picnic along the route. There is a table at the Morenci crossroads.

Hike done in beautiful weather. We made a round trip from point 3, a place called "Malbastit" where there is a signpost for the hike to Montségur Castle. The duration and distance are identical to the description, except for the elevation gain, which is 622 metres. From point 6, it is easy to continue on to Montségur Castle, with a superb view upon arrival. On the route, we only encountered joggers. We chose this itinerary to make the most of the winter sun and avoid wooded areas.
