Ilhat - Gréoulou circular

A circular route for a family hike with wide, safe paths, starting from the village of Ilhat (from below). The outward route runs along the top of the cliff with a beautiful view to the south over the Pyrenees. The return route runs along the bottom of the cliff. A path through the woods leads to the hamlet of Gréoulou. There are many alternative paths, but some of them are dead ends! So it's best to stick to the trail.

Description of the walk

Parking is available at the entrance to the hamlet of Ilhat, located between Lavelanet and Foix on the D10.

(S/E) Walk up Rue Principale for about 200 metres.

(1) Turn left and take the path that climbs uphill.

(2) Take the path on the right, heading east, and continue climbing to reach the Plateau de Mouillet. Continue along the top of the cliffs. You will come out onto the cross-country path that supports the GR® de Pays d'Olmes: yellow and red markings.

(3) Turn left, cross the Pas de Mouillet and follow the markings to the crossroads near the Orri d'Esclas.

(4) Take the GRP® on the left.

(5) When you reach the hamlet of Gréoulou, leave the GRP® and turn right twice to head back up towards the south-west. You will reach a crossroads shortly after entering the undergrowth.

(6) Take the path on the right and continue to the Esclas crossroads.

(4) Turn left and follow the path back the way you came until you reach the crossroads after Pas de Mouillet.

(3) Leave the path you took on the way there on your right and continue straight ahead along the bottom of the cliffs. Reach the village of Ilhat (from above).

(7) Follow the road down to the right.

(1) Continue on the left to reach the car park (S/E).

A very beautiful walk, part of the route follows the GR trail, but a GPS is necessary for other sections.
We met the shepherd of Gréoulou (very friendly) with his herd of magnificent goats, well guarded by two patous and three other herding dogs. It's best to know how to behave around these formidable guardians.
